Manish Maskara is currently pursuing a PhD in Development Studies from School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. In his doctoral research, he is examining the question of class formation for migrant labourers, taking the case of everyday struggles of Bihari migrant labourers working in construction sector in India’s cities.
As a Graduate Teaching Assistant at SOAS, he teaches theories of global development and its contemporary issues to undergraduate students and also leads an informal discussion group on ethnographically informed approaches to fieldwork for doctoral students.
Broadly, his interests lie in engaging with questions concerning emerging forms of labour politics, in particular, that of migrant labourers, their livelihoods, associated daily struggles and their relation to development practice. After graduating from Azim Premji University, Bangalore in 2014; he worked on issues of poverty, migration, gender, water resource management and agriculture.
He has published recently on the exodus of migrant labourers in India’s lockdown and on their struggles in the train journeys between their village and the city. His forthcoming book chapter in the edited volume on ‘Covid19 and Migration’ examines the response of migrant labourers to India’s lockdown beyond popular framings as the victims of or/and violators to the same.
