The Jewish Learning Fellowship (JLF) is an eight week experiential, conversational seminar for students looking to deepen their understanding of Judaism on their own terms. At the core of JLF is a community of students who develop connections with each other and learn together. Each week, Jewish text, ancient and modern text, are given voice through vibrant conversations and chavruta, intense study with another student. Students who complete the course are eligible to earn a $300 stipend.
Topic: Pursuing Justice
How might Jewish tradition refract an ethos for the kind of commitments we want to make and the actions we want to take to improve our shared society? For whom are we responsible? What do we need to know about ethics, power, and action before we make those decisions? To address these enduring questions, we will look to classical and contemporary Jewish wisdom, to see what it might offer us as we work toward creating a more just world.
Please read the following application instructions carefully.
There are TWO options being offered for JLF this semester:
Cohort 1--A virtual cohort that will also include Israeli students from Bar Ilan University who will join for half of the sessions. This cohort has limited space available--up to 10 students will be invited to be a part of this unique learning experience. This cohort will be taught in English. Hebrew language proficiency and experience with Israel or Israelis is a plus but not a requirement. Experience with and passion for social justice causes, learning, and action is also a plus. The virtual cohort will meet on Sundays at noon beginning on Feburary 6 via zoom
Cohort 2--A more typical JLF cohort that will meet in person (pending COVID protocols) at Hillel. This cohort will meet once per week at Hillel. This cohort will meet in person (if university policy allows) on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9pm.
You have the option to apply to join one cohort or both cohorts. Please mark your preference below.
Please complete this application by February 11. After you submit your application, Rabbi Cook will reach out to you directly. If you have any questions about the application or about JLF in general, you can direct those questions to:
