Our Parent Academy on Monday, November 18, 2019, 6:30-8:00pm will provide a series of short educational workshops for parents/guardians covering a wide range of digital topics and resources. Students are invited to attend with their parent/guardian.

Workshops will focus on digital tools that promote academic success, support, and safety of students.  In order to sign up for specific workshops in advance, please complete the questions below.

WORKSHOP CHOICES
Please select three (3) of the following workshops in order of interest.  

Parents/guardians have time to attend two (2) thirty minute workshops.  Some workshops have limited capacity and will be scheduled on a first come, first serve basis.  Your third choice will only be scheduled if a workshop does not run or becomes full.

COMPUTER SCIENCE & CODING
Today’s students think more like coders and become fluent in various programming languages at a younger age than ever before.  This workshop will show you how grade 5-8 students are preparing for modern work requirements through coding and computer science.  Specific tools being used to code and create programs will be explored.

GOOGLE CLASSROOM for PARENTS/GUARDIANS
This workshop will highlight how classrooms and assignments are created, customized, and assigned in Google Classroom.  Google Forms for assessment including surveys, multiple choice, short answer, and responses to videos will be highlighted as time allows.

HELPING STUDENTS AVOID the PITFALLS of PLAGIARISM
In this workshop, participants will learn the importance of citing sources and paraphrasing necessary to avoid the “Pitfalls of Plagiarism”.  Citation generators and the MLA 8 citation format will be explored.

SAFE, SECURE, RELIABLE ONLINE INFORMATION
This workshop will help you navigate databases available for students.  Participants will learn where to find credible and current information for school projects and reports.  Learn how students explore the Middle School books and resources through the online tool, the Destiny Catalog.

STUDY WITH QUIZLET
This workshop will guide participants through the basics of Quizlet, a web-based application that allows students to study vocabulary through learning tools and games.  Participants will have time to explore existing study materials, create their own sets, and play Quizlet during this workshop.
