Thank you for your interest in Medical Spanish!
To provide students with an effective and personalized curriculum, class sizes will be limited to about 24 students. This will allow students to practice their speaking skills in a smaller class setting and receive individualized feedback from teachers. We want to ensure that students interested in Medical Spanish will remain in the course and actively participate for the entirety of the 2023-2024 academic year. Thus, we ask that you take the time to complete our application thoroughly!
ELECTIVE OVERVIEW:
Medical Spanish is a peer-led and peer-taught program that seeks to prepare students to take a medical history in Spanish and to develop culturally competent health care providers.
PROGRAM GOALS:
Complete a Spanish medical history on a real standardized patient
Learn Spanish medical terminology using natural language-based learning techniques
Participate in cultural events, activism, and opportunities to practice your Spanish in real medical settings
Following the completion of your application and placement exam, you will be invited to learn in one of five differentiated instructional levels:
1. Novice
2. Beginner
3. Intermediate
4. Advanced
5. Proficient
SSOM medical students have the opportunity to earn two weeks of elective credit during their M4 year*
CCGH 110 - Medical Spanish Student Elective
CCGH 410 - Medical Spanish Teacher Elective
* credit cannot be earned for both teaching and enrolling as a student
REQUIREMENTS:
Attend 20 peer-led medical Spanish classes
Attend four lectures/seminars dealing with cross-cultural healthcare or healthcare disparities
Complete an end-of-year written and oral assessment
