In Real Life... The Prequel - How often are we seeing children in cars, restaurants, stores, offices ,churches and other social settings glued to their screens? We are experiencing a society where children are in front of a screen wherever they go. They are missing opportunities that prepare them to be socially successful in school and life. Our vision is to have a place for our kindergarten and 1st grade students to experience, learn and practice through play. This will build strong real life skills such as, communication, team work, conflict resolution and leadership for our youngest students, by providing a learning environment that mirrors the real world.

Educate the Heart - During this pandemic students have been isolated and quarantined. This isolation and being behind the screen for so long we have lost of the art of self awareness and self regulation. Children need tools and hands on activities to build these aspects back in their lives not only at school but outside of school. The 5 components of SEL are self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. These components need to learned and practiced just like multiplication or personal narrative writing. To truly build and put relationships first we needs ways to help children find their voice again in a healthy and safe way while at school. I would love to provide SEL games, hands on activities, and books to help my students learn and build up the 5 components of SEL. Teaching kids how to be able to talk things out with each other as well as express their feelings to adults will help children as they go throughout their school years as well as into the workforce after school.

Making it Stick: A Brain Based Approach to Phonics - Phonics is unquestionably the most important skill that beginning readers learn. In Forney ISD, we understand the importance of a strong foundation in phonemic awareness and phonics instruction. The science of teaching reading is a relatively new area of focus for many teachers in our district. We are working diligently to increase the effectiveness of our current instructional resources while incorporating brain based components. This project provides an element of support our teachers and students need to help phonics skills stick. The project provides a resource that is simple, effective, and works seamlessly with any reading series or phonics program already in place. Essentially, it's an added layer of impactful instruction that can be implemented immediately in any classroom.

Inside Out: Bringing Diversity into the Classroom Through Literature - Education today is more than just making sure our students master all the TEKS. The world around us requires students to become adults that are aware and sensitive to the diversity surrounding them. We live in a time where knowledge of other cultures is important. It can be difficult to be understanding and have empathy for others when you do not have a working background knowledge of others' perspectives. Representation of an array of cultures is important for students of every ethnicity. They also need to see and learn about different people and cultures. This can be made possible through authentic literature. Students need to be immersed in books throughout their educational career to help build life long readers. This project covers both of those ideas. We have selected a plethora of books that will peak our students' interests ranging in various genres, cultures, and levels. The list includes books about scientists, politicians, athletes, musicians, inventors, artists, explorers, and culturally diverse topics. They feature culturally diverse characters and real people. Many of them are written by authors from different backgrounds. This project will reach beyond the students sitting in our ELAR classes today and onto future students.

Got gaps? Do the Math! - VersaTiles and Do the Math are two programs that have been widely used in many districts to meet the needs of all students. VersaTiles are a hands-on approach to keep students engaged in their learning while giving them a quick way to assess their own progress. It covers below grade level and above grade level so all students will benefit from VersaTiles. Do the Math was developed by Marilyn Burns, one of America's well known math educators, as a way to build numerical reasoning and student's confidence in math. It is an intense small group instruction that builds the foundation of adding, subtracting, multiplication, divisions, and fractions. By using both of these programs we will be able to meet the needs of each student on our campus, whether it is to build a foundational concept that they have missed during the Covid shut down, or to extend the learning of those students who need to be challenged in advanced classes.

Phonics Fun for First Graders is Fundamental! - Phonics fun for first graders is definitely fundamental. The Go Phonics 50 Phonics Game Set will help us on our way. We are excited about our district's initiative to get our students back to the basics of reading this year with the science of reading. We are striving to meet the needs of our learners in light of the recent struggles due to lost learning in these unique times. In our push to guide our students using systematic and explicit instruction in phonics, we are looking for more avenues to help us along the way. To meet the needs of our students, our school has purchased new decodable reading materials from Go Phonics that focus on phonics in a way that will help our students develop better word decoding and fluency skills. We want to use the Go Phonics 50 phonics games set, along with the coordinating readers, to help our readers experience success and have an engaging way to do so. This set has a wide variety of fun games that focus on the most essential first grade TEKS in regard to reading. The games focus on phonograms, vowels, digraphs, consonant blends and much more. They will give our students the repetition they need in a fun way that will build their skills and confidence. They will also help them expand their vocabulary and comprehension of word meanings that will carry over into reading the coordinating decodable readers and other texts.

Mental Health Matters - Since March 2020, there have been two pandemics occurring simultaneously: the Covid-19 Pandemic, but also the Mental Health Pandemic. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 5 adults and 17% of youth (6-17 years old) experience mental illness. We have 2,302 students and 176 staff members at North Forney. Statistically, 391 of our students and 35 of our staff members are currently struggling with a mental health issue. That is a HUGE number. We are consistently talking about Covid-19, but we also need to be discussing the mental health struggles that people are experiencing and trying to handle. This grant, "Mental Health Matters" is a step in the right direction, by providing resources and tools to our students and staff on mental health, mindfulness, and coping strategies. These resources include journals, books, and inspirational materials. The first step in ending the mental health stigma is education and as a school we have such an amazing platform to change the way that mental health is handled among youth and adults. Helping student break the code of reading - Learning how to read is arguably one of the most important and challenging skills students will learn in school. The K-2 teachers of Forney ISD went through an extensive training this summer to learn more about the English language and how to help our students read through Science based instruction. Among the concepts we learned, one stands out the most. Students must learn that the 26 letters make 44 sounds. The rules that go along with teaching our young 5, 6 and 7 year old kids to read are numerous and hard to remember. We researched and have found a set of phonic stories to help our students as they learn the complex English language rules. These stories will promote them to transfer what they are hearing to decoding words within text. The Secret Stories is an approach that connects The Science Of Reading to Brain Science. These stories help students understand why letters in specific places of a word make a certain sound as well as why when two specific letters get together they make a whole new sound. This tool of Secret Stories will afford us a vertical tool to in-depth connect the phonics rules into long term memory. Using this resource K-2, will allow the students to have multiple years exposure which will enhance their abilities. This is vitally important for our students who are experiencing a learning gap due to Covid loss. Consistency is key!

Equity for Basic Students - Equity for Basic Students, is a project that is designed to provide all freshmen Biology resource students at North Forney High School, equitable learning opportunities in their own classroom. The purpose of Equity for Basic Students is to provide resource students the same chance to master content enjoyed by their peers with specially selected tools and equipment. Since this is a new program, the lab equipment, models and hands on learning supplies sometimes are different from those in a regular or advanced Biology class. These supplies will help simplify and fill learning gaps from the past. The ultimate goal is for these students to master the same TEKS as their peers, but in a way that is meaningful to them, leading to their success. Choosing lab equipment that is more simplistic, safer, or easier to work with and comprehend, will provide meaningful hands-on biology lessons for our students. My hope, and that of others in our district, is that this is just the beginning of new success for all students hungry to learn. This class and the tools used, will help hone the skills these students need for their future careers like those in medicine, biology, a variety of first responder jobs, and engineers, just to name a few. As our district continues to grow, let us continue to develop excellence in Forney ISD that empowers and educates every student.

We would specifically like to purchase a birthing simulator that includes a pelvis and baby, along with the ability to administer medications, assess fetal heart tones and fundal height post delivery. This would allow the students to be prepared should they need to deliver a baby in an emergency. We would also like to purchase more equipment in order to make our lab more realistic. For example, we would like to simulate hemorrhage and blood administration, as well as create a medical office environment that the students can use to practice patient clinic visits.

IRL Survivor - "In Real Life" is a ground-breaking and innovative course. I love teaching it and am so grateful for the opportunity to get to do so. We know what it says it's supposed to be, but, let's be "real", the big question is "How do you break new ground; implement a solid, new curriculum; keep middle schoolers entertained; maintain excellent classroom management; help to change school culture; and produce students ready for a much bigger world?? Well, I am tying all of these elements to the television show Survivor. Survivor, in my opinion, is the ultimate social experiment. It is also a physically and mentally demanding game. Now, in class, we can't really do or justify straight physical challenges, but mentally challenging and socially engaging challenges are perfect. I am developing challenges throughout this school year and have bought and/or created all of the elements needed. The grant would help me in getting enough puzzles and challenges to make everything a bit more time-friendly. I have also been using "Kindness Coins". These are coins that are given out whenever a student is found doing something good for someone else, when a student or a group wins a challenge, or when a student completes a "Kindness Bingo" card. The coins are collected and can be turned in at any time to my Survivor Store, which includes simple things like a bottle of water to more costly items like brain puzzles, stuffed animals, etc. The grant would help alleviate the costs on me.

Social/Emotional/Behavioral Positive Behavior Support System : P.R.I.D.E Practicing Responsibility, Independence, "Doing what's right," Everyday - Social skills is an important aspect to a child's developmental growth. Thus, leading to a proper functioning in life. Adequate social skills provide children with the skills needed to make good decisions in life, what to say to others, how to ask others for help how to maintain good relationships in the society. The academic performance, involvement in co-curricular activities, social relationships, behavior, and family relationships are based on the extent to which an individual possess good social skills. Social skills help in navigating everyday interactions e.g. exchanging information, holding conversation, making new friends, maintaining the friendship, asking for help from others and giving instructions. Effective Social Skills/Sensory breaks can facilitate a pro social pattern of behaviors which will ultimately lead to academic growth. Additionally, a daily tracking system is implemented for each student. Students who struggle with over stimulation and sensory processing difficulties, as well as those that struggle with social anxieties, will be monitored through the PRIDE (Practicing Responsibility, Independence, & "Doing What's Right," Everyday) program. Once these tools are in place and actively utilized, we will expect to see a positive increase in focus, academic growth, pro-social behaviors, and independent use of self help skills.
