Harold Alfond Foundation Ambassador Scholarship: Fall 2024 Cohort Application Form

Through the Generosity of the Harold Alfond Foundation, we are pleased to offer funding that enables students to pursue graduate degrees in one of the Maine Graduate and Professional Center's collaborating institutions, including the University of Southern Maine’s Muskie School of Public Service, the University of Maine Graduate School of Business, and the University of Maine School of Law, in a vibrant and interdisciplinary environment.

Scholarship Benefit: Generous Scholarship in the amount of $12,000 annually.

Alfond Ambassadors engage with career development services, work closely with graduate faculty advisors, network with members of the employer community, and actively participate in interdisciplinary activities. This scholarship program is part of the University of Maine System-wide UMS TRANSFORMS initiative.

In fall 2024, this scholarship benefit will be awarded to two incoming students - one in Public Health and one in Policy, Planning & Management - at the University of Southern Maine Muskie School of Public Service. (Currently enrolled students are not eligible.) The application timeline for applicants is as follows:

  • Application deadline: March 27, 2024 at 11:59PM EST – Please note that you must submit a completed degree application to the USM Admissions Office before your scholarship application will be considered. The USM Portland dorm provides on campus living.
  • Finalist interviews: Early April 2024
  • Scholarship offer acceptance deadline: April 15, 2024

If awarded funding, will you be able to meet the expectations of this program?

(1) Students must maintain good academic standing and continuous, full-time student status throughout the program (exceptions can be made for approved leaves).

(2) Participation in Alfond Ambassador cohort related activities is expected as a core element of the scholarship award.

- A commitment to attend in person the leadership cohort which will occur throughout the academic year. The minimum commitment is attending two full day retreats (one in the fall and one in the spring) and 2-3 additional meetings throughout the academic year.  Failure to participate will jeopardize future participation and funding, including the next semester's payment.

– Contribute to scholarship program development and evaluation, and progress reporting to supporters. 

– Participate in some public events as ambassadors for the program and their school                                                                             

(3) Students must be able to travel to the Greater Portland area for in-person events on a regular basis. 

(4) To qualify and be awarded a scholarship, the applicant must live in Maine.

(5) Post-graduate professional employment in the field of study and in Maine is strongly encouraged.
