General Description:A WIC Peer Counselor (Levels 1-4 and Lead PC) is a paraprofessional support person, contracted to provide peer counseling (PC) support services for the New Mexico Department of Health WIC Peer Counselor Program. PCs give basic evidence-based breastfeeding information and encouragement to pregnant and breastfeeding WIC parents within the PC Scope-of-Practice. WIC PCs are contractors that are subjected to the State of New Mexico Department of Health WIC program rules and regulations.
Qualifications: - Past or current WIC participant (“peer”)
- Breastfed at least one baby (does not have to be currently breastfeeding).
- Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other parents enjoy a positive experience.
- Demonstrates good communication skills and good work ethic.
- Has internet access.
- Has a phone that they can use to make calls to clients.
- Must live in the state of New Mexico and have a current New Mexico driver license.
*Note: A PC cannot be certified or licensed in lactation, health, and nutrition and cannot be a community health worker. Duties:
- All work will be conducted in the NM WIC Google Workspace; any work created in the workspace will be property of the NM WIC PC Program; all work must be documented in English.
- Receives a caseload of WIC parents through WIC staff referrals and makes routine periodic contacts with all referred parents through telephone, google chat or google meet.
- Gives basic, evidence-based breastfeeding information and support to new parents, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and how to get off to a good start with breastfeeding. Also helps parents prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.
- Helps clients during pregnancy and until the breastfeeding baby is 12 months old, at suggested intervals determined by the WIC PC program.
- Is available for questions from WIC parents outside the WIC clinic and outside the usual 8 to 5 WIC clinic hours.
- Uses WIC-approved client education materials on breastfeeding, that are provided by the WIC PC Program.
- Reviews and adheres to the PC Scope of Practice, “yielding” and referring clients experiencing breastfeeding problems to their TL.
- May facilitate or assist with a WIC specific breastfeeding support group.
- Follows HIPAA requirements to keep client information confidential (high priority).
- Keeps accurate and complete documentation of all contacts made with WIC parents in the PC Program Google Workspace health record system.
- Attends all PC program meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate/assigned by their LPCC or TL.
- Mentor or shadow other PCs, Lead PCs or Local PC Coordinators for improved services and outcomes.
- May assist WIC staff in promoting the PC Program through special projects and community outreach.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Starting Pay: $15.00 Starting Contract Hours for the year: 480hrs/10hrs per week based on 48 weeks
Bilingual Pay:$16.00 Pay is Monthly
