Thank you for your interest in joining our book club. Dr. Keisha Bell and Dean Susan Cheng will be co-facilitating discussions on the book White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Dr. Robin J. DiAngelo along with other student and faculty facilitators who will guide small discussion groups. This book club is co-sponsored by the GUSOM Office of Diversity & Inclusion and the Medical Center Graduate Student Organization (MCGSO) Graduate Student Organization's Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee. This will be the first book in a series of other books and articles to come during this next academic year.
To hold a space for rich discussion and reflection, the book club will meet via ZOOM for 6 times every 2 weeks at 2 hours at a time and cover 2 chapters each time. We will convene this summer either on a Thursday night 7:30-9:30 pm EDT or Saturday morning 10-12 am EDT. Based on survey responses, we will confirm the final time based on most responses and select that 1 time for everyone. (We understand if you cannot participate if the time you want is not selected.)
Our summer schedule will likely look like this:
Meeting 1: July 9 or 11
Meeting 2: July 23 or 25
Meeting 3: Aug 6 or 8
Meeting 4: Aug 20 or 22
Meeting 5: Sept 3 or 5
Meeting 6: Sept 17 or 19
We request that you commit to attending all the meetings to get the most out of the book club. However, if you need to miss 1 meeting that's ok. With your small group participation, you'll be asked to prepare questions and come ready to share reflections from the book.
We hope you will join us!
Please sign up by Friday, June 19 at 5 PM EDT. We will assign groups and confirm the meeting time.
