Thank you for your interest in being a Run Minnesota Training Team Lead!
Training Sessions: Spring and Fall 12-16 week build ups with twice weekly group runs.
Summary of Role: Team Leads are a very important part of the marathon and half marathon training program and ambassadors of Run Minnesota! Team Leads are the experienced and trusted runner in the group. They know the route, set the pace, encourage friendly conversation, and remind runners of trail etiquette and runner safety. They are friendly, welcoming, responsible and experienced runners. We ask Team Leads to commit to leading their pace groups at weekly runs. Preference is given to those who can commit to the full class. We can make arrangements for substitute TL’s when needed (cause everyone needs a vacation).
Team Leads run with the assigned pace group for the group weekly workout. You are not expected to pace their actual race. The following is a list of expectations for our leaders:
Know the Route - Be sure you know the route including the location of water stops, restrooms and turn around points for alternate distances. Study the coaches email describing the route and review any last minute changes with the coaches prior to the start of the run.
Set the Pace - Set the correct pace for your group - not too fast and not too slow. It is good practice to encourage others in your group to alert you when you are running too fast.
Be Sociable - Talk to each runner in your group and learn their names. Get to know their goals and concerns. Many runners continue to return to our program because they enjoy running with others and socializing.
Be Ready to Run - Arrive at the meeting point before the run starts. Arrange for a substitute ahead of time if you are unable to lead the run.
Keep Runners Safe - Ensure runners return safely. If someone is falling behind, make sure someone stays with them or call the coaches to pick them up. Let the coaches know when you notice that a runner is struggling, injured, or otherwise not prepared.
Carry a Cell Phone - Be prepared for the unexpected by carrying your cell phone with the phone numbers of the coaches in your contacts.
Team Leaders will receive entry to our training programs at no cost, Run Minnesota Apparel (Sweatshirt or Jacket and a training shirt), and a $75 Gift Certificate to a local running store.
Run Minnesota will further support Team Leads who seek coaching certification by reimbursing the cost of certification and providing mentorship.
