Step 1: Decide Which Course You Want to Teach Online
If you are interested in teaching online/hybrid courses at BMCC, your first step should be to discuss which course you would like to develop with your department chair and get their approval. You can also speak to the E-learning Center to discuss where there is the most need for online courses, which course might lend itself best to online or hybrid, or just use us as a sounding board for your ideas. We are here to help! At BMCC, you have the option of teaching fully online, online, or hybrid courses. The distinctions are as follows:

Fully Online: 100% online. No in-person meetings or campus visits necessary. We encourage you to teach fully online courses since they are the most popular among students.

Online: 80%-99% online. These courses have 1-3 campus meetings, usually for orientation, midterms, or exams, but it’s mostly online.

Hybrid: 33%-80% online. This means you’ll have both in the classroom and online assignments.

Reach out to us to enroll you in the INTRODUCTION TO TEACHING ONLINE AT BMCC module, where you’ll learn the basics of teaching online at BMCC. It’s online and takes less than 1 hour to complete.
Step 2: Fill Out the Application to Teach Online Courses at BMCC
Once there is initial agreement and acceptance by your chair, you will need to:
- Fill out the application form.
- Eliza Osae-Kwapong, our Cohort Manager (eosaekwapong@bmcc.cuny.edu) will forward your application to your Chair and cc you on the communication.
- Once your Chair approves the application by email, Eliza will be in touch with you on the next steps.

Application due dates:
Fall Cohort: August 15th
Spring Cohort: December 15th
Summer Online Cohort: May 15th

Step 3: Develop the Online/Hybrid Course
Step 3 is determined by your level of experience teaching e-learning courses. Step 3 is determined by your level of experience teaching e-learning courses. All instructions must complete the self-guided module available on Blackboard: https://bbhosted.cuny.edu/webapps/blackboard/content/listContentEditable.jsp?content_id=_33526446_1&course_id=_1540661_1

A: "I have never taught an e-learning course anywhere."

If you have no experience teaching online, you will need to join our COURSE DEVELOPMENT COHORT which runs three times a year (Fall, Spring, and Summer) for approximately 5 weeks. The work is done partially in-person and partially online (yes, it’s a hybrid course!). You will develop your course throughout the 5-week period. You join by submitting the Application to Teach E-Learning Courses at BMCC (see above). You must have experience using Blackboard or agree to additional training online.

B: "I have taught an e-learning course, however, it was not at BMCC."

Meet with an E-Learning Instructional Designer to determine if you are ready to teach online at BMCC. You could be approved to teach online without having to participate in the Course Development Cohort by showing one of your existing courses or a portion of one. If you are approved, you will then be given guidelines on how to develop a course at BMCC and the option to take advantage of private consultations with an Instructional Designer. If not, you will be asked to join the COURSE DEVELOPMENT COHORT (see above). You must have experience using Blackboard or agree to additional training online.

C: "I have taught an e-learning course at BMCC before, but I want to develop a NEW course."

The Chair or designee must notify the registrar and your course will be put on the schedule as AVAILABLE FOR REGISTRATION. You can immediately start developing your course once you submit your application. That’s all there is to it! Although optional, E-learning strongly urges you to work with an Instructional Designer to develop your new course.  We can provide you with assistance, workshops, private consultations, tools, and services that can greatly improve the quality and efficacy of your course.

We can also work with you on applying the Quality Matters rubric to your course and help it achieve a ‘best-in-class’ status. Finally, we have a NEW course shell that was piloted Fall 2018 and has received very positive reviews from faculty and students for its ease of use and innovative approach to teaching online. We hope you see E-learning as a place you can go to for assistance, collaboration, and innovative ideas. We are here to help!
Step 4: Course Review, Approval, and Release
Once the course is ready (at least 6-8 full weeks of content), you should submit it to E-learning for feedback. This is optional for Instructors who have developed courses at BMCC previously. The feedback you will be provided follows the BMCC E-LEARNING COURSE CHECKLIST guidelines. Please work with the Instructional Design Team at the E-learning Center early on in the process, they can advise you to make sure you are on the right track, give feedback or brainstorm, and provide support.

After you have received feedback from E-learning and made the necessary changes to your course, you are ready to submit to your department for review and approval. The department chair or designee must review and approve it per the BMCC E-LEARNING COURSE CHECKLIST. The Chair must fill out the checklist and email it to the E-Learning Center.

Once the BMCC E-LEARNING COURSE CHECKLIST has been submitted to the E-Learning Center, the course is ready for release! E-learning contacts the registrar, your course is taken off hold, and students will be able to register in the same way as any course.

Course Review Schedule
Courses that must be submitted to E-learning for feedback (at least 6-8 full weeks of content) should be done on the following schedule:
- If the course will be offered in Spring: the second week of November
- If the course will be offered in Summer: the second week of March
- If the course will be offered in Fall: the second week of May
- If the course will be offered in Winter: the second week of November
Classroom Assignments
If you will be developing a hybrid or an online course and having regular or infrequent face-to-face class meetings, your department scheduler will reserve a room for you once you let them know what days you will be meeting on campus.
