Notice: I reserve the right to veto your commission if I find that the piece of media (or its author/creator, for that matter) has un-nuanced and exceedingly sexually violent, racist, xenophobic or otherwise harmful elements that I feel have no place on my shelf nor my newsletter. Or yours. I’ll offer one opportunity for you to choose an alternative piece, and if it follows the same case as the prior piece, you will face a one-month commission suspension. Books: A flat rate of $3 USD for books under 400 pages (paperback hardcopy) stands currently, adding one dollar for each 100 pages going forward. 1 cent per word is the standing rate for my responses, given that my reviews rarely exceed 4,000 words, bringing the total price to around an estimated $18-30 USD ballpark range. This comprehensive fee compensates me for my time researching and writing, purchase of the book if I cannot acquire it digitally, and an adequate reading period to process the material and offer a sophisticated response. One dollar will be added to these fees for a commission to remain private (not shared with our Substack community or any other outlet).
Television: A flat rate of $3 per season stands currently for any television series, adding one dollar for every season exceeding a base number of three. 1 cent per word remains the standing rate for my responses, which parallels my rates for reviews of literature and film but leaves room in the flat rate for compensation for the additional time required to watch a season (or more) and critically reflect upon it, as well as research, critical coverage and standing reviews, and review of cast and crew press materials. One dollar will be added to these fees for a commission to remain private (not shared with our Substack community or any other outlet).
Films: A flat rate of $3 per film stands currently, adding one dollar for every additional film (e.g. franchises, recommended viewings alongside another film). 1 cent per word remains the standing rate for my responses and reviews, which compensates me for time acquiring and viewing the film, researching its conceptualization and production process, reviewing cast and crew press materials and critically reflecting upon the film itself. One dollar will be added to these fees for a commission to remain private (not shared with our Substack community or any other outlet).
I’m a full-time student and I do all *this* primarily for free and for fun, save for external freelance engagements, so I'm excited and very grateful to have the opportunity to share my work in this way! I also want to ensure that my subscribers and audiences get to hear what they want to hear from me in terms of coverage and subject matters, and commissions are a method of enforcing that reader feedback!
Think of it this way: you could buy a Cool-Girl-Shacket for next fall or you could buy the opposite of my silence in a controlled format. I can accept payment by Venmo, PayPal, and Zelle only if necessary. Venmo is preferred. Let's get to work!
