As a member of the band, your child will be provided a free weekly 30-minute lesson as well as a weekly rehearsal as a full band.
Because Mr. Miller is split teaching band between two schools, this year's beginning band will have a cap of 75-80 students. Students will be chosen to be a part of the program on a first come, first served basis. On this form, there will be a spot to choose a first choice instrument (the instrument your child would most like to play) and a second choice instrument.
Mr. Miller will try his best to give each student their first choice, but will only be accepting the first 10-12 students for each instrument. (Trumpet, Flute, and Percussion tend to be the most popular instrument choices). Students not given a spot will be placed on a waitlist, in the event that additional spots open up later on in the year.
Requirements to be a part of band:
- Attendance- Students are expected to attend their weekly lesson/full band rehearsals. 3 or more consecutive unexcused absences may result in dismissal from the program. (Unexcused absences= skipping lessons/rehearsals for recess/specials) (Excused absences= absent from school, needs to make up work for their teacher) Students are also making a year-long commitment to attend all concerts and performances.
- Good Behavior- Students in the music program here at Wilbur are expected to show that they care about themselves, others, and their community. Students are also expected to remain in good academic/behavioral standing.Â
- Practice- All students in the band program are expected to practice their instrument for at least 15 minutes a day. As I often love to tell my students, "Practice makes progress". Students who do not practice their instrument often become frustrated with their progress. It is up to Mr. Miller's discretion if a band student is ready to perform in a concert/performance.
- Preparedness- All band students are expected to come to their lessons/rehearsals fully prepared and ready to learn. This means that they have their instrument, music, and method book. Students who come unprepared may be sent back to their homeroom with an unexcused absence.
Please review the above expectations with your child and fill out the form below ASAP. If your child is selected to be a part of the band program, they will be sent home with a band folder with information about their instrument assignment, how to obtain an instrument, and information about their first lesson! 🙂
I am very much looking forward to working with your child this year. My goal is to give your child a successful and fun experience in instrumental music. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.
Sincerely,
Robert Miller
