Try AI Micro-Internship Mentor Application
The Try AI Micro-Internship is a two-week virtual research experience, designed to introduce early undergraduate students to artificial intelligence (AI) research and its potential application in society. We are seeking mentors to work with students during this research experience. Over the two weeks, students will learn about AI research and its application to society. The program is designed for students in their first or second year of undergrad with limited research experience, especially those from historically underrepresented groups in computer science. Program dates are January 8th to 20th, 2023.

Mentors should be:
-Experienced with computing (or related) research
-Committed to increasing access for underrepresented groups in computing and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
-Able to participate in the meeting dates below
-Able to meet the time commitments below
-Based in Massachusetts

This year, we are creating two roles for mentors to choose from: Research Mentor and Project Support Mentor.

Research Mentors will meet with mentees to scope out a project and guide them through the research process. Mentors may be graduate students, postdocs, or faculty but we welcome applications from others who meet the above criteria. We ask that Research Mentors plan to attend a training (1 hour), the program orientation and mentee presentations (approximately 2 hours each), and meet with mentees for 30 minutes approximately 3 times throughout the two weeks, for a total time commitment of approximately 6.5 hours.

Project Support Mentors will host office hours throughout the two-week program to support mentees as they work on their projects, discussing mentee questions, e.g., on programming, doing research in general, and making presentations. Project support mentors may be undergraduate students, preferably in their second year or later, with prior research experience (or prior participation in the micro-internship program). We ask that Project Support Mentors plan to attend a training (1 hour), the program orientation (approximately 2 hours), and host 3 one-hour-long office hour sessions throughout the two weeks, for a total time commitment of approximately 6 hours. Project Support Mentors are welcome but not required to join for the mentee presentations.

Program Meeting Dates (meetings will be held via Zoom, but we will require in-person I-9 verification)

- Training: December 16th, 4:00 - 5:00 PM ET

- Program Orientation: January 8th, 3:00 - 5:00 PM ET

- Mentee Presentations: January 20th, 3:00 - 5:00 PM ET

Mentor applications are due by October 31st. Individuals will be notified by November 18th.
