Purple Friday Queer Celebration

In the wake of the recent elections where several parties which have taken distinctive anti-queer and anti-feminist positions have surged in the election outcome, we want to address how this affects the overall political climate and the implications for students, staff and faculty at universities and universities of applied science. Specifically, we will explore success stories how queer and female students & staff thrive in the male dominated, heteronormative world of education and academia. 

There will be time to ask burning questions during the panel session hosted by Academia@Workplace Pride lead Michiel Kolman (he/him) and Women@Workplace Pride lead Angelique Meul.

Purple Friday is a day on which pupils and students can show their solidarity with LGBTIQ+ people by wearing the colour purple at school. In the Netherlands, the day has been held on the second Friday of December every year since 2010. Purple Friday was inspired by Spirit Day in the United States, which was first held in 2010 as an expression against bullying of LGBTIQ+ youth.

Purple Friday is traditionally celebrated at schools but over the last couple of years, we’ve seen that higher education, and the corporate workplaces are embracing this celebration of solidarity with the LGBTIQ+ community.
