Thank you for your interest in Tracy Aviary's Salt Lake Avian Collision Survey (SLACS) project! SLACS is a research initiative designed to examine the effects of Salt Lake City’s light pollution on migrating birds. Many birds migrate at night, and they can be drawn off-course into areas with high artificial light levels – such as downtown Salt Lake City - and collide with buildings and structures before finding their way out again. As part of our survey team, you will conduct early morning surveys to document and collect these birds to help us better understand and help mitigate this problem. Learn more here:
http://www.tracyaviaryconservation.org/slacsSLACS Volunteers will:
-Receive online training and mentorship
-Conduct one-hour, early morning walks
-Learn an easy-to-do scientific protocol for looking for light pollution impacts on birds
-Learn how to handle bird specimens, collected under a special permit
-Submit data to Tracy Aviary
To volunteer for this project, you'll also need to fill out Tracy Aviary's general adult volunteer form, which can be found here:
