Volunteer with Tracy Aviary -- Salt Lake Avian Collision Survey
Thank you for your interest in Tracy Aviary's Salt Lake Avian Collision Survey (SLACS) project! SLACS is a research initiative designed to examine the effects of Salt Lake City’s light pollution on migrating birds. Many birds migrate at night, and they can be drawn off-course into areas with high artificial light levels – such as downtown Salt Lake City - and collide with buildings and structures before finding their way out again. As part of our survey team, you will conduct early morning surveys to document and collect these birds to help us better understand and help mitigate this problem. Learn more here: http://www.tracyaviaryconservation.org/slacs

SLACS Volunteers will:
-Receive online training and mentorship
-Conduct one-hour, early morning walks
-Learn an easy-to-do scientific protocol for looking for light pollution impacts on birds
-Learn how to handle bird specimens, collected under a special permit
-Submit data to Tracy Aviary

SLACS Volunteers
The following questions are about the volunteer position.
Surveys are in the early mornings during April-May and Sep-Oct. During this general time, are you comfortable attending surveys in the early morning (a little after dawn)? *
This volunteer role involves waking up near sunrise to visit downtown SLC blocks. If this is doable for you, please let us know the day[s] of the week that you would prefer: *
To ensure sufficient data collection we ask each community scientist volunteer to complete at least 3 surveys. How many surveys are you willing to complete? *
Survey Locations
Surveys take place in downtown SLC. See the routes here: tinyurl.com/4bafr78t

ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS
Surveys take place in downtown locations with sidewalks. These surveys involve occasionally collecting specimens from the ground, including the grass and in landscaping.

Reasonable accommodations can be made to welcome participants of varying physical abilities to participate.

Both service animals and pets (dogs) are welcome on these walks! If bringing along your pet, please only do so if the pet is friendly with new people and other animals.
Would you prefer to keep the same route for each survey or cover different routes? *
Which route[s] would you prefer to visit? See the routes here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7J8MJSX Then, list the Route number[s]  below. Write "Assign Me" if you do not have a preference. *
SLACS involves collecting specimens of birds that collided with buildings in the evening prior. For the study, we train volunteers on how to handle hurt or deceased birds. With that said, we understand that this can be difficult to handle. Are you comfortable with learning to handle deceased wildlife and submit specimens, according to a Salvage Permit? *
How did you hear about this volunteer opportunity?
