PhD DE in STS Application
The Designated Emphasis in Science & Technology Studies is open to all UC Berkeley PhD students in good standing with research interests related to the humanistic and social studies of science and technology, broadly conceived.

Students may come from any discipline in the humanities, the social sciences, engineering, the natural and physical sciences, and professional schools across campus.

Applications are due by 1 November. Interested students must apply at least three months before their Ph.D. qualifying examination, and are encouraged to apply early in their degree to most benefit from being a part of the DE Community.

Please have the following on hand to complete this application:
1. A statement of intent summarizing research interests, educational or employment background, and any related coursework in areas related to Science and Technology Studies. (Applicants are not required to have already completed STS 200 or other STS courses to apply.)
2. A list of courses and instructors the student has taken or will take to satisfy the elective requirements. You will be asked to include a link to the syllabus (if available) of any courses not on our list of approved DE electives.
3. The name and contact information of the faculty member providing a Letter of Recommendation. Your letter writer must be a member of the Science and Technology Studies Affiliated Faculty group. Please ask your letter writer to send their letter to cstms@berkeley.edu and include "STS DE letter of recommendation: [your name]" in the subject line by the DE deadline.
3. The title and abstract of your a writing sample (e.g., a paper you have written for a UC Berkeley graduate course) that is indicative of your research interests. Please send your full writing sample to cstms@berkeley.edu and include "STS DE writing sample: [your name]" in the subject line by the DE deadline.
