Study Title: The Impact of Social Support on Postpartum Mental Health

Introduction

You are being asked to join a research study. The purpose of this research study is to answer specific questions about how different types of social support relate to postpartum mental health in new mothers.

This consent form will explain:

It will also explain that you do not have to be in this study. You should ask questions before you decide if you want to participate. You can also ask questions at any time during the study.

Why is this research study being done?

The purpose of this research study is to investigate whether different types and levels of social support are associated with postpartum mental health outcomes, such as symptoms of depression and anxiety. You are being asked to participate in this study because you are a new mom of at least 18 years old and have given birth to your first child in the last 24 months.

How many people will take part in this study?

This research study hopes to enroll at least 30 participants.

How long will you be in this study?

This study will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

What will happen in this research study?

If you choose to participate, you will be asked to complete a brief online survey. First, you will be asked basic demographic questions. Then, you will answer two sets of questions: one about your experiences with social support from the people in your life, and another about your mood and emotional well-being over the past two weeks. You may ask to see the full survey before deciding to participate. The entire process should take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

What are the benefits of this research study?

This research will not benefit you directly. However, information we learn about this postpartum mental health may help people in the future.

Will you receive any payments for participating in this research study?

You will not be compensated for your participation.

What are your rights as a research participant?

Your participation in this project is voluntary. You will not be adversely affected if you refuse to join, or decide to withdraw from the study.

If you withdraw from this study, any data already collected will continue to be used. However, no new data will be collected.

What will happen with the information we collect as part of this research study?

Any study information about you will be kept private and will only be given out with your permission. Your research records will be kept private. In order to make sure the research is done properly, my Psychology 321 Professor, Dr. Pamela DeRosse, may need access to information about your participation in this study.
