The Saint Joseph Grade School Chess Club is open to students in grades 1-8, from beginners to expert players. It is helpful if children have had some exposure to chess, but the only prerequisite is a desire to learn and practice the game. Participants will learn strategies of chess in preparation for tournament play. Students are encouraged to participate in SJGS-hosted tournaments, as well as other area tournaments.
The winter session will be broken into two groups, meeting as follows:
New/Beginner: players will meet for 5 weeks on Fridays, January 24 - February 21.
Intermediate/Advanced: players will meet for 10 weeks on Fridays, January 24 - April 3 (no club on March 6).
For all players, the club meets after school in the Ackles Center. Children should be picked up promptly at 4:30pm at the Founders Hall entrance on the east side of the building.
We welcome any parents and/or grandparents who would like to assist with Chess Club. A safe environment check is required in advance for anyone who has not already completed one.
The Chess Club participation fee is $25 per child for the season for New/Beginner players and $40 for Intermediate/Advanced players. The fee covers snacks and supplies. We also provide practice suggestions and materials for those who wish to continue working at home. Any tournament participation fees will be handled once the season has started. All billing will be handled through FACTS.
