Call for Contributors
The Social Work and Law Symposium exists to harness energy, passion, and wisdom to advance the field of forensic social work and the capacity of forensic social work practitioners. This is a future forward event bringing together educators, researchers, community practitioners, justice-oriented leaders, and students for synergistic learning collaboration.

We seek dynamic contributors to use our virtual spaces to engage audiences in thought-provoking presentations, workshops, interactive discussions, inspirational talks, and exhibits focused on advancing knowledge, skills, and abilities, around forensic social work practice including the intersection of social work and law as related to our adopted multi-year theme, "A Kaleidoscope of Transformative Justice."

Join our efforts to shape the future of forensic social work as well as to make a national and global impact toward justice and change by contributing to this year's symposium. 

Successful proposals will clearly align with this year's theme and relate to identified learning areas. Prospective presenters are strongly encouraged to submit proposals that emphasize diversity, equity, inclusion as well as involve interprofessional, cross-disciplinary, and/or active student collaboration. Proposals related to a broad range of topics focused on the following learning areas are welcome.

Presentation: Prepare an informative lecture that expands the knowledge base and/or raises the consciousness of attendees related to a learning area aligned with this year's theme. 45-minutes in length.

Workshop: Prepare a practical interactive session that engages attendees in learning concepts and skills related to a learning area aligned with this year's theme. 45-minutes in length.

Roundtable Discussion: Prepare an interactive session that engages attendees in thought-provoking reflective discourse related to a learning area aligned with this year's theme. A minimum of 3 discussants (maximum of 5) to offer 5-7 minute presentation on the chosen topic. The organizer/moderator must indicate the different perspectives that will be offered on the chosen topic. The majority of the session must be devoted to dialogue between discussants and attending audience. 45-minutes in length.

Ted-like Talk: Prepare a dynamic and engaging presentation that informs attendees and/or presents a call to action related to a learning area aligned with this year's theme. The presentation should include an awareness of current knowledge on the subject. The proposal must indicate the importance of the topic to this year's theme. 12-15-minutes in length.

Exhibition for the Social Work and Law Symposium is a virtual platform to provide information about an advocacy campaign, inspirational idea, cutting-edge research, services as well as personal and professional stories pertinent to the national audience. Prospective exhibitors will be solely responsible for the facilitation of their session and maintaining event connections. Exhibit types include visual displays in the form of posters, banners, pamphlets, storied images, flyers, expressive arts (e.g., drawings, paintings, poetry, etc.), books, and other types of information. Exhibits should be accompanied by a clear statement of purpose. Exhibitor should be prepared to respond to attendee questions during their 10-minute session.

General Guidelines: We invite and welcome contributions from educators, researchers, community practitioners, justice-oriented leaders, and students. Interdisciplinary as well as student-led, and student-involved contributions are strongly encouraged  To submit a proposal, the following information for consideration is required. 
  • Title of session
  • Name, title, affiliation, and contact for lead contributor and each co-contributor
  • Session type
  • Learning area 
  • Learning objectives
  • Description of the topic (200-300 words)
  • Reference list of sources to support the topic
  • Description of how the session will be facilitated from start to finish (200-300 words)
  • Whether the topic has been formally presented in a public forum
  • Description of the purpose and relevance of the contribution to the practice population and to the field (50 words)
  • Description of the nature of your interdisciplinary, cross-professional or student collaboration (if applicable, 50 words), 
  • Description of your DEI emphasis (50 words)
  • Summary of interactive elements and technical requirements (50 words each)
  • Biographical statement for each contributor (100 words each)
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Proposals must be submitted no later than April 30, 2024 for consideration. Notification about participation will be delivered by June 14, 2024.   

Cost: All accepted contributors must confirm their acceptance upon receipt as well as pay the discounted event registration fee to secure their virtual attendance no later than August 9, 2023. *Note: registration is not available for groups. Each individual member of a group must pay the scheduled registration fee separately to participate according to the accepted contribution.
