According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), medical physics is the application of physics to medicine. It uses physics concepts and procedures in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. As part of a team of healthcare professionals, medical physicists play a significant role in assuring the safe and effective use of radiation in medicine. The presentation aims at giving an overview of the responsibilities for medical physicists in various sub-specialties including radiotherapy, diagnostic imaging and nuclear medicine, health physics and engineering physics. The knowledge, skills, competencies and examination process for the certification scheme of individual medical physicists in Hong Kong will also be introduced.
