We are excited to announce our first program that is designed for Members to bring their younger family members, children and grandchildren to learn about Marine Biology.

The Gladys Valley building not only expands the capacity of the Hatfield Marine Science center with additional labs, classrooms and an auditorium but the design of the building is an engineering model for coastal communities providing an evacuation route for up to 920 people in the event of a tsunami.

A box lunch and refreshments will be served in the sunlit atrium at 11:30.

Cinamon Moffett, HMSC Research Program Manager, will provide a tour of the building at noon explaining many of the features that make the building tsunami proof and there will be an opportunity to use the evacuation route to the roof of the building.

Our ARCS scholars Clara Bird, Sabena Siddiqui, Michaela Kratofil will give talks about their work at Hatfield, and we will finish with a short movie about marine life in the auditorium.

Please plan to arrive at the Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building around 11 a.m. There is plenty of parking. Weather appropriate clothing is encouraged as the site is quite exposed.

Our program will end around 1.30 so there will be plenty of time to tour the Marine Visitor Center with your children. It is walking distance from the Gladys Valley building. The center provides K-12 education programs including tidepool touch tanks, the eight-armed greeter Octopus, the tsunami tank and the erosion tank. A new addition is the augmented reality sandbox. Other local attractions include the Oregon Coast Aquarium and the sea lion docs on Bay Boulevard.
