After a year of operating under Trump-level budget funding, Congress shamefully passed DHS funding that continues to expand the deportation machine. Specifically, the bill includes: $8.3 billion for ICE, an increase from Trump’s last budget, funding to incarcerate a daily population of 34,000 people in ICE detention, increased funding for ICE’s harmful “alternatives to detention” (ATDs) programs, $256 million for border technology, funding for Trump’s wall. This is unacceptable.
Our representatives are going to start negotiations on the budget for 2023, and this is our opportunity to let them know that in this next budget cycle, they need to follow through on their promises and protect and invest in immigrant communities, and not invest more money in ICE + CBP. In April, faith communities across the country are celebrating holidays dedicated to reflection, holiness, and freedom. On April 20th, we will use our collective power to lobby our representatives to let them know that as people of faith we demand they Defund Hate. Use this google form to sign up to lead or participate in a lobby visit with MOCs or staff, and organize your communities to join our day of action. If you have not lobbied before or are not familiar with the appropriations process, there will be a workshop and action hour on 4/18.
