Navigating Airports: Enhancing Wayfinding Signage for Wheelchair Users
You have been invited to participate in a study conducted by Algonquin College student researchers at the Human-Centred Design Lab. The study is to examine the challenges faced by wheelchair users when navigating airports. We aim to comprehensively understand the obstacles encountered by wheelchair users during their airport journeys. Your input is invaluable to our research efforts as we evaluate existing regulations, identify gaps, and propose potential solutions for improvement.

Please carefully review the following information before deciding whether you would like to participate in this study.

To participate in this study, you must be between the ages of 18 and 60 and use a wheelchair for mobility. You should have travelled to the airport either alone or with assistance.

This study will be conducted in three phases using a mixed-methods approach. Phase 1 will involve a screener survey to collect quantitative data. After completing the survey, participants will be asked if they would like to participate in a semi-structured interview, which is the study's second phase. The interview, lasting for 30-40 minutes, will be conducted either in person or online via Zoom, as per the participant's preference. As mentioned above, the interview will be led by researchers from the Human-Centered Design lab at Algonquin College. Calendly (https://calendly.com/) will be used to allow participants to schedule interviews at their convenience. During the interview, participants will be asked about their experiences using a wheelchair while navigating at the airport. It is essential to note that participants can choose not to answer specific questions if they are not comfortable doing so. After the interview, participants will be asked if they are interested in participating in the third phase of the study, which involves a validation interview to review the design outcomes.

For this study, we need to collect data in the form of a written transcript, along with an audio and video recording. The recordings will be obtained from Zoom and then stored in a Google Drive folder for research analysis purposes only. Additionally, we will primarily use the Miro board to analyse the data collected.

We want to assure you that your personal information will be kept confidential during the study, and any details that could identify you will be removed before data analysis. To maintain anonymity, your data will be assigned an identification key and de-identified. This means that your responses cannot be directly linked to you.

Participating in this research study gives you a chance to win one of four electronic gift cards, each worth $25. The winners will be chosen randomly. If you choose to participate in the follow-up interview, you must provide your email address. You'll receive an email notification if you win the draw, and your gift card will be delivered via email. You are free to withdraw from this study anytime before June 10, 2024. To do so, you just need to inform any of the researchers that you no longer wish to participate. After you withdraw, your data will be de-identified, which means it will be destroyed, and researchers will no longer be able to access or associate your contributions with your identity. All data will be encrypted and password-protected. Zoom, Google Drive, and Calendly servers are located in the United States and are regulated by American law. Miro Board servers are hosted by the European Union and comply with requirements under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) adopted by the European Union.

As a participant in our study, you will be exposed to minimal risk. However, we want to make you aware that there is potential for emotional stress due to discussions about sensitive topics related to the challenges that wheelchair users face when navigating airports. We understand that these discussions might touch on topics that could cause stress or discomfort. So, it is important to note that the focus of our study is not on disabilities but rather on the experiences of individuals who use wheelchairs.

We encouraged you to self-identify and share your experiences without fear of any inquiries regarding your disability. If you ever feel uneasy or overwhelmed while going through this process, please know that help is available. Consider reaching out to these free counselling services for support and guidance:

We also want to make sure that this study is transparent and impartial. To do this, we want to let you know that the researchers and affiliated institutions have no financial interests in this study. The Algonquin College Research and Ethics Board has reviewed and approved all potential conflicts of interest to make sure that we conduct and report this study in an honest and unbiased way. We believe that by being open and honest about our research, we can help people better understand air travel and its impact on our society.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the ethical aspects of this project, please don't hesitate to contact the principal investigators mentioned below.
