2020-21 LARP Rules and Expectations

By selecting  ¨yes, I understand" you are  stating that the athlete and parent acknowledge that you have read and understand the topic discussed and agree to that specific dance team rule or expectation.  To be a part of LARP DT you must abide by the dance team and school rules/expectations. PARTICIPATION: It is preferred that final decisions on participation are made before November 18th. This is to prevent issues with dance routines. If a student chooses not to participate or is dismissed from the team they must hand in all money owed and uniforms. They will not be eligible to rejoin the team until the next season tryouts. *

ATTENDANCE: Practices, performances, & competitions are mandatory for all members of the team. Exceptions include parent/guardian permission, excused by one of the coaches, illnesses, school related issues, or other excused absences. Good attendance and punctuality is imperative for team growth. Dance requires consistent ongoing training, and dancers who excessively miss practice will not be able to perform at the same level as those who have participated in practices regularly. *

EXCUSED ABSENCES: (1) Acceptable excused absences - Parent/guardian permission, excused by one of the coaches, illnesses, school related issues, or other excused absences (i.e. approved absence by parent and school for family vacation). (2) Ways to inform coaches -- Parent/guardian must call the coaches or provide a signed note explaining the absence before the start of practice or event. Exception: absent from school due to illness. - To be excused from weekend practices on the day of, a parent/guardian must call one of the coaches. --Schedule appointments outside of practice. If this is unavoidable please call or send a signed note to the coaches to excuse them from practice. *

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES: --1st unexcused absence will result in a verbal warning, a player/coach meeting to create a plan to prevent unexcused absences, and sitting during the next performance or competition. -- 2nd unexcused absence will result in dismissal from the team. *

ATTITUDE / BEHAVIOR: --Have unconditional acceptance and support for team members. Awareness of team reputation in public is important, especially when wearing team uniforms/clothing. --Be encouraging, open to changes and learning new things. --Feedback should be positive, motivating, and inspiring. -- Refrain from negative comments (e.g.¨I´m fat,¨ ¨I don´t like this uniform,¨ ¨I can´t,¨ ¨this person shouldn´t¨) yelling, talking back, rolling eyes, and keep gossip/outside rumors outside of practice and other team events. -- Consequences will be given at the coaches discretion. Coaches may bench for inappropriate behavior during practice and team events after one verbal warning. *

VERBAL WARNING: Coaches will pull athletes aside and discuss the issue at hand. Discussion may include a plan to prevent it from recurring. *

BENCHING: Benching can occur after one verbal warning. Athletes are expected to practice and attend all performances and competitions, but they will not be allowed to dance at the next performance/competition after being benched. *

DISMISSAL: Dismissal can occur after one verbal warning, and one benching (exception: unexcused absences - dismissal on 2nd unexcused absence) or if MSHSL or school rules would require dismissal from the team. *

COMMUNICATION/DISCUSSION CHAIN: Communication is expected to follow this chain: 1st- Athlete & coach; 2nd - Athlete, parent, & coach; 3rd -- Athlete, parent, coach, and activities director (possibly involve principal or superintendent). *

CELL PHONES/ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Keep tucked away and silenced. Dancers will be allowed to check their cell phones quickly during breaks at practice and competitions. Exceptions would be emergent situations. If this rule is abused then dancers will not be allowed to check phones during practice and must ask for permission to use their devices. MSHSL RULE: cell phones and cameras will not be permitted in locker rooms at any MSHSL-sponsored competition. *

TRAVELING: All team members must travel to and from team events with the team unless excused by a parent/guardian, school, and coach. --Dancers may only leave with their parent/guardians from team events. Coaches must see dancers leave the building with their parent/guardian. If athletes do not comply they will be benched for the next performance and competition. Leaving with someone other than a parent/guardian has to pre-approved by the school. Dancers should add their name to the ¨sign out¨ list if they are not riding the bus home (this will be in the team room on competition day). -- BE ON TIME (15 minutes before the bus is scheduled to leave) -- BE RESPECTFUL of bus drivers (quiet voices, appropriate & polite music requests) -- Scheduled stops only. -- Coaches will provided estimated arrival/departure times. *

PRACTICE: -- Bring water bottles to every practice (fill before the start of practice). -- Typical attire includes jazz/yoga pants, t-shirt, sports bra, tank top (no spaghetti straps, and dance shoes or tennis shoes. -- Tennis shoes must be brought to every practice. Required for high kick. Jazz shoes should brought to every practice as well. -- No jewelry, long nails, gum or candy at practices/performances/competitions. -- Hair must be in a tight bun at all practices. -- All athletes are expected to learn and dance both routines during practice, unless coaches instruct dancers otherwise. *

COMPETITIONS / PERFORMANCES: Teams will be determined by coaches. Being on a team does not guarantee dancing at every competition (exception would be JV red jazz (c-squad)). -- Give positive feedback to other teams (e.g. nice job). -- Be respectful of visiting schools. -- Refrain from pointing, giggling, covering your mouth to talk or whispering while other teams are on the floor performing. -- Stay with the team unless excused by coaches. -- Warm up with the team as a team. DO NOT execute any warm up or stretch we have not done at practice. -- No practicing 15 min before a performance. -- Keep costumes zipped up in public. *

MSHSL: No MSHSL violations. No reported drug or alcohol use, no school suspensinos (ISS OR OSS) or expulsion. If an athlete is found to have a MSHSL violation, they will meet with coaches to discuss eligibility. *

SCHOOL PROPERTY: All school property borrowed for the season, including uniform pieces, garment bags, etc. must be returned to the coaches on the day designated for return. Dancers and parent/guardians will be billed for items not returned. *

AWARDS: (1) All conference - coaches will choose all conference dancers. Strong dance technique, improvement throughout the year, strong leadership and sportsmanship are considered when choosing all conference dancers. (2) Lettering - dancers must perform at least one varsity routine at 50% of the regular season competitions and at least one varsity routine at sections. (3) All state dancers - coaches will submit videos of dancers selected by them (2 for jazz, 2 for kick) and submit to MADT. MADT then decides who will be invited to All State from those submissions. *

CAPTAINS: Varsity - to be eligible for varsity captain athletes must ... participated on varsity the previous year, attend spring dance welcome, attend summer camps/activities put on by the team, write a letter to coaches explaining why you want to be captain, who you want as you co captain and why, and what you will bring to the team. JV - write a letter to coaches explaining why you want to be captain and what you will bring to the team. *

DANCE TEAM WELCOME: Typically scheduled between March & June. Athletes interested in participating in dance for the upcoming season are expected to attend. VARSITY - to be eligible for varsity athletes must attend spring welcome. JV - expected to attend the spring welcome. EXCEPTION - New students may tryout in the fall. Also, if an athlete works over the summer and would like to try out in the fall they may write a letter to the coaches explaining why they want to try out. *

JV RED (C-Squad) REQUIREMENTS: This level of dance is intended for the beginner dancer. This team will compete, but will not focus on competition - they will focus on learning basics and prepping for JV GOLD. No prerequisites/requirements for this team. SOME OF WHAT YOU WILL LEARN>> 1st-5th positions & other basic ballet terminology, variety of turns, variety of leaps and jumps, basic kick technique. To dance high kick athletes must be able to kick above their waist for the entire routine. *

JV GOLD (B-squad) REQUIREMENTS: This level of dance is intended for the intermediate dancer. This is still a ¨learning¨ level and is a time for dancers to work on skills required for varsity. JV Gold will be considered a competitive team. PREREQUISITES: Kick height above waist for entire routine, strong and controlled straight/open/whip kicks, toe touches, split leaps, c jumps, single/double pirouettes, controlled/strong arms, a la seconde turns (2 rotations), attitude/pencil/coupe turns (1 rotation). *

VARSITY (A-squad) REQUIREMENTS: This level of dance is intended for the advanced dancer. This team is focused on competition and learning advanced skills. PREREQUISITES: Triple pirouette, a la seconde turns (two counts of eight), 4-wall a la seconde turns (one count of eight), calypso leap, split leaps, toe touch, coupe/pencil turns (two rotations), attitude turn, 2nd position leaps, ronverse jump/leap, turning disc, barrel, kick height must be at shoulders through entire routine, variety of kicks (fan, inverted fan, hinge, straights, opens, whips, scissor, swing), strong and controlled arm movements. *
