Parish Planning Survey

What does the next 50+ years look like for St. Martin Parish?  How well do our facilities support hospitality and stewardship today is important, but it is paramount that we consider how well our facilities will support our parish in the coming years.

The Long-Range Planning Committee has been meeting for several months to assess where our parish is now and what needs can be anticipated for the future.  After careful review, discussion, and debate we believe that it is time to either (a) remodel and expand or (b) replace our existing church building. The reasons are as follows:

  • Our existing building does not have the capacity to properly welcome parishioners and visitors adequately.  Our narthex is woefully undersized for the size of our parish and there are no proper restroom facilities to accommodate weekly Masses, funerals, or weddings.  Our parish needs a proper place for people to gather informally after Mass.  In addition, the building has aged to the point of significant concern. The mechanics, heating, electrical, lighting, plumbing, and HVAC are out of date and inefficient.  The seating capacity at Mass is often limited, the sacristy is cramped, and the confessionals need updating especially for privacy and to be compliant with current safe environment standards.
  • There is a local and national shortage of priests.  This shortage is causing parishes to share priests and consolidate the number of Masses celebrated.  St. Martin is not in danger of being merged but smaller parishes in our area, over the course of the next generation, could be merged with St. Martin, therefore increasing our need for more seating capacity.  Another scenario would be the pastor of St. Martin overseeing multiple parishes causing St. Martin to lose a Sunday Mass.  In either event, the seating capacity of St. Martin, as it stands today, will be exceeded. As we look to the next 50+ years we must consider how our church building will play a role in fulfilling the mission of the Church as well as giving us the capacity to be a thriving parish.

We have held two town hall style meetings and received very good feedback. This is your parish and your community, so we are asking for your input. This survey is confidential and not a financial pledge, but rather a tool for our committee to make informed decisions.
