INTRODUCTION: Preparing to receive First Communion is a big deal. And no matter how many times we receive Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist, it should always be a big deal. Jesus comes to us in a unique way in the Eucharist. When He comes, we receive Him into our body and our soul. This is a very beautiful, personal, and intimate sacrament and something we should never take for granted! It is such a holy, joyful occasion. Our souls become the bride of Christ. That is why girls wear white dresses and boys wear suits. Pope Francis, calls the Eucharist the "Sacrament of Love" as "...it constitutes the source of the Church’s life itself. From this Sacrament of love, in fact, flows every authentic journey of faith, of communion, and of witness." Today's lesson is the third of six lessons in the "Together in Jesus: First Eucharist" sacrament preparation program that will help you to prepare to receive this "Sacrament of Love." So let's get started!
OPENING PRAYER: Welcome to your "Together in Jesus: First Eucharist" Lesson 3. As outlined in the first lesson we will begin each lesson with a prayer. So take a moment to gather at your sacred place or table and to recite, together, the prayer pictured below.
JESUS GATHERS PEOPLE TOGETHER:  In this lesson we are going to read a story from the Bible about Jesus. The stories about Jesus are found in the Gospels in the Bible. The Gospels were written by four of Jesus' followers; Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The reading for this lesson is taken from the Gospel of Luke. At Mass, we hear these stories during the part of the Mass known as the "Liturgy of the Word". When we read these stories about Jesus, we are reminded that he is the one who brings us together. So let's look at the cover page of your Lesson 3 and read the story from the Bible, "Zacchaeus Welcomes Jesus." When you are done reading, locate your sticker of Jesus and place it in the appropriate spot, then answer the question below.
By the end of the story, who did Zacchaeus want to be more like?
1 point
Summary: Zacchaeus' encounter with Jesus leads to great change in his life. He agrees to give half of his wealth to the poor. This change came about because Jesus befriended him. By sharing a meal and eating together, Zacchaeus became a changed man. He realized that he wanted to become more like his new friend, Jesus.  Now take a little time to print out from this lesson link the "Zacchaeus Coded Words" sheet to find the secret words and phrase about Zacchaeus' encounter with Jesus. Then answer the question below.
What is the coded answer to "What changed Zacchaeus"? *

JESUS FEEDS A GREAT CROWD: Now we are going to learn about another meal that Jesus shared, only this one is with a lot more people. For this story, you will also need more people. Take a moment to get your Mom, Dad, brothers or sisters involved in playing the different parts in this story. Have them help you to act it out. If no one is available, it is fine to read it on your own. When you are done reading, go to your sticker page and find the basket of bread and fishes and place it in the appropriate spot. Then proceed to the questions below.
What did Jesus feel for the people that came to see him? *

Did Jesus want his disciples to buy more food? *

Who did Jesus trust to feed all of these people? *

How many people did Jesus feed? *

How many baskets of food were leftover when they had finished eating? *

Summary: Great job! Jesus showed his love for the people when he didn't want to send them away hungry. He trusted in God, his Father, to provide for them when they only had five loaves and two fishes to feed 5,000 people. The story of the multiplication of loaves and fishes is a story in which Jesus gives his disciples an example. He wants them to nourish all who come to them, even crowds. He promises abundant nourishment. In the miracle story Jesus takes the loaves, thanks God for them, and gives them to the gathered people. These are like the actions the priest does at every Eucharist, the celebration in which we gather to eat with Jesus at every Mass.
EATING TOGETHER IS A WAY OF MAKING FRIENDS: So think about all the special meals you have had in your life. Think about birthday meals, Thanksgiving meals, Christmas and Easter meals. Why are these meals so special? If you said because it is a time to share food and stories with one another. To be together as a family. You would be right. This was also a way that Jesus shared with his followers. When Jesus was growing up in a Jewish family, they blessed bread and wine at every Sabbath meal. And we do the same thing at Mass. We bless the bread and wine during the part of the Mass known as the "Liturgy of the Eucharist" . And then we share a meal as Jesus taught us. Take a couple of minutes to read page 4 of your lesson. And then answer the questions below.
At what meal did Jesus and his family bless the wine and the bread?
1 point
When does our community come together to share a meal and bless the bread and the wine?
1 point
Summary: Now it is time to close out your lesson. You will need a piece of bread and a cup of grape juice to do this. Gather with your Mom or Dad or both and read through the "Thanking God for Bread and Wine" prayer pictured above. I have also attached a link to the lesson that will allow you to print it out. When you gather to do this think about Jesus when he was young and gathered with his family on the Sabbath to bless the food and wine.
Super excellent job! You have just completed your third "First Eucharist" lesson! We are halfway there! Way to go! Now go back to your sticker sheet and find the "Lesson 3" sticker and place it in the box on page 4 at the bottom of the page (see picture above). And you are done! Have a blessed week!
