We* are hosting a panel session titled "Missing narratives in discussions around diversity and inclusion in research software engineering" at SeptembRSE (
https://septembrse.society-rse.org/). This panel will facilitate discussions to help: (1) create inclusive communities in RSE by centring on intersectional voices, (2) increase awareness of power imbalances that negatively impact multiple marginalised groups in research, and (3) provide a call-to-action for diversity and inclusion. We will bring together experts who lead different efforts for improving diversity, equity and inclusion in academia, for example, training, recruitment, policy, data-led research, activism and so on.
We want to use this opportunity to highlight important issues and challenges related to diversity, accessibility and belonging that you or your colleagues face but don't find being discussed in RSE/academia. Among other topics, we hope to discuss disability, mental health, representation of the Global South in RSE efforts and mentorship support for members from marginalised communities.
With this goal, we invite you to nominate yourself or someone who would like to share thoughts and concerns around missing narratives in RSE and provide a call-to-action. The deadline to submit your response is 08 September 2021.
All nominated panellists/contributors will be invited to submit a 3 minute video or audio to share some details about themselves, the "missing narratives" they want to draw attention towards, and a call-to-action that can help increase inclusivity in our research communities. These recordings will be shared with the attendees as a YouTube playlist, and all the contributors will be fairly acknowledged.
The panel organisers* will invite up to four panellists and will work to try and ensure that we are able to represent as wide a range of intersectional views and perspectives as possible from the list of nominations.
* This panel is co-organised by Malvika Sharan, Jeremy Cohen and Rowland Mosbergen. Contact Malvika Sharan (
