Tectonic Theater Project’s                         Moment Work...On Camera!
TECTONIC THEATER PROJECT'S - MAKING INDIVIDUAL MOMENTS ON CAMERA

Virtual Theater Educator Intensive Workshops - Beginning and Intermediate Levels
and a Q&A Forum with Teaching Artist Grant Varjas
Presented by Perpich Center for Arts Education

Theater Educators and Directors (both K-12 and College/University) are invited to join us for these virtual 4-hour intensive workshops with Grant Varjas, a senior teaching artist from the internationally renowned Tectonic Theater Project. The workshops - one beginning level and one intermediate level - will train educators in the company’s original theater devising methodology known as “Moment Work™.”

This year's virtual offerings will focus on how to explore the poetry of a scene on camera! In these workshops, you’ll use the principles of Moment Work™ to craft rich moments of storytelling for the screen, using gesture, prop, costume, sound, lighting, architecture, and camera placement.

You must have access to a phone camera or a computer camera. Simple editing software is a plus.

More about Moment Work
Tectonic provides training year-round in Moment Work, a collaborative method for devising theater that uses every available element of stagecraft--sound, lights, architecture, text, costumes, and more--to bring a story to life. It pushes writers, actors, designers, and directors to come together in an experimental setting and use these elements to create moments: units of theatrical time. Artists then layer and weave these moments into a compelling narrative that can only be told on the stage. The resulting work is uniquely and specifically theatrical. The technique breaks apart the traditional roles of theater artists, enfranchising artists of all disciplines to be part of the whole creative process and to be true investigators of the possibilities of the medium.

About the Teaching Artist
Grant James Varjas is the playwright and composer of 33 To Nothing, produced in 2018 by Chicago’s A Red Orchid Theatre (directed by Tyrone Philips). New York City productions include 33 To Nothing (GLAAD Nomination 2007), Accidentally, Like A Martyr (also Director, at Paradise Factory Theatre), and Undetectable (Planet Connections Festival). Grant is on the board of Tom Noonan’s Paradise Factory Theatre. He has worked extensively as a writer and actor with Tectonic Theater Project, where he is a Teaching Artist with their Moment Work Institute; including acting in the HBO film adaptation of The Laramie Project, and the Los Angeles production of 33 Variations with Jane Fonda. Grant has worked as an actor at the Goodman Theater; Lincoln Center, The Roundabout, and EST (all in NYC); and CTG in Los Angeles; amongst many others. The original cast recording of 33 To Nothing is available on Spotify, Apple, and Amazon Music.

*Due to the size of the groups, and in order to ensure the most rich and productive experience for all participants, Mr. Varjas will be joined by 1-2 teaching assistants from Tectonic Theater Project.
