Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Identities in Theatre
A Workshop for Directors, led by Shira Helena Gitlin (they/them)

In this workshop, we will cover "Trans 101" and delve into what it means to work with transgender and gender nonconforming individuals as a director. Topics covered include trans history, using pronouns, definitions, casting, script selection, production, marketing, and more.

The workshop will take place over zoom and last approximately 80 minutes. All workshops are PWYC.

All workshops will cover the same material, so you only need to attend one!

About me:

Shira Helena Gitlin (they/them) is a trans non-binary director, deviser, dramaturg, and musical theatre enthusiast. They have held Trans Training workshops for Directors Lab North, Trader Joe's, and individual theatre makers across the United States. They are also a part of StageSource's Gender Explosion Initiative.

Selected directing credits include: 7 Rooms: Masque of the Red Death (Flat Earth Theatre), Theatre: A Love Story (Women's Theatre Festival), Tales from Camp Strangewood: Mr. Champagne (Sparkhaven Theatre), Shrek: The Musical (Mohawk Trail Regional School), and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Hampshire College).
They served as the associate director under Bevin O’Gara for The Pink Unicorn at SpeakEasy Stage Company. They were also SpeakEasy’s Artistic Fellow for the 2019-2020 season. Shira is a graduate of the Arden Professional Apprentice Class 26 and has a BA from Hampshire College in directing with an emphasis on musical theatre studies.
