The League of Women Voters Santa Barbara would like to hear from you as we prepare for our second annual Housing Forum (on Zoom, March 16, noon to 1:30 pm). If you live or work in the South Santa Barbara County, please contribute your concerns and ideas about our challenging housing situation. Results will help provide community input for the forum and for elected officials and planning staffs as they update their Housing Elements and General Plans this year.

The LWVSB Housing Committee has agreed that our current HOUSING PRIORITIES are:
1) Support efforts to preserve and significantly increase LOW and MODERATE income housing supply for all ages, family size and disabilities.
2) Support prioritizing LOCAL RESIDENTS and WORKERS for new housing units.

Imagine it is 2030. If your vision has been achieved, what is the state of housing in South Santa Barbara County? (check all that apply)

More affordable housing has helped our population become more diverse and inclusive - different ages, ethnicities, races, disabilities.

Santa Barbara continues to put welcome mat out for families and workers of all incomes.

More workers live closer to their South County jobs.

New residents downtown have brought back economic and social vitality to State Street.

Housing production targets from the state have been achieved without sacrificing environmental resources, livability, quality of spaces, historic and view assets.

Our homeless (and formerly homeless) population remains stable in numbers and are given permanent housing where possible.

The tourism industry and businesses in general are thriving alongside happy local residents.

We have cost effective means of incentivizing and enforcing good landlord, vacation rental hosts, second home buyers and tenant behavior.

Santa Barbara region leads the way in carbon footprint reduction due to shorter commutes.

Gentrification has been avoided and residents continue to be prioritized over developer profits.

Local residents suffering from a mental illness can access appropriate housing and services.

All County neighborhoods provide their share of affordable housing units as zoning allows.

Do you agree that the City of Santa Barbara should ensure that a significant number of affordable housing units actually gets built, especially for lower to moderate income categories?

Yes, let's give a new vision a chance to succeed by embarking on doable plans and completing as many affordable projects as possible over the next 10 years.

I prefer to continue our previous pattern of managed growth where we do not prioritize building affordable housing for our local workforce over market rate housing that second home and/or vacation home renters can occupy.

What COMPROMISES would you accept to get truly affordable housing for local residents and workers assuming that water limits, historic preservation and fire concerns have been addressed,

Build eco-friendly villages on edge of agriculture, farms or open space such as Bishop Ranch or San Marcos Hills

Build 25 studios for homeless in my neighborhood if appropriate zoning and close to bus and supportive services provided.

Taller buildings (up to 60') currently allowed by the City of SB for high density rentals should be limited to projects with a significant number of affordable units such as 35% low or 50% for moderate income.

Build a limited number of taller buildings (say 72') if 100% affordable and where blocking views is less of a concern such as close to UCSB and airport
