2024 Solstice Artist in Residence Application
ABOUT THE ARTIST IN RESIDENCE OPPORTUNITY:

The Summer Solstice Celebration, is a 501(c)3 non profit arts organization in Santa Barbara, CA  in our 50th year of bringing the community together through the arts.

Each year the Summer Solstice Celebration staff and artistic team put on the annual Santa Barbara Summer Solstice parade on State Street and a 3-day art and music festival in Alameda Park. 

We have a limited number of paid ($500-$1500 honorariums) Artist in Residence  and Performance Artist-in-Residence positions available for the 2024 season that we would like to open up to our artistic community. To make a proposal, please read the guidelines and complete the form below.  Once your proposal is reviewed, you will be interviewed if you are in the running.  We received a grant from the Towbes Fund for the Performing Arts, a field of interest fund of the Santa Barbara Foundation to support the creation of performance art pieces in the Parade and Festival, working in collaboration with our staff of artists.  You may apply for this grant using this form; please specify that you are apply for the Towbes Artist in Residence position, as a performance artist, movement, mime, theatrical artist, director, your association with an organization and how the organization may participate.  For an individual artist in residence, please give an overview of your project,  your experience, plus a sketch.

The selected Artists will create an ensemble/float at the Community Arts Workshop (CAW).  The workshop will open May 1.  Workshop hours are:  

Public Workshop Hours: Wed - Fri: 3pm - 8pm
Sat & Sun: 12pm - 6pm

The workshop is open to Artists during non public hours per schedule provided by the Artistic Director.

Details about the ensemble will be available on our website and distributed to the community through our social media.

Supplies and materials will be available at the workshop.  Specific materials may be purchased if required and is within budgetary limits, upon approval of the Artistic Director.  The Artist may also initiate a crowdfunding campaign (like Indigogo.com) to raise additional funds for the project, if desired.  

GUIDELINES:

The proposed ensemble should incorporate the theme "FLIGHTS OF FANCY" into its design, as well as represent the Celebration of art, life, and the Solstice.

The proposed ensemble should follow all current County of Santa Barbara health and safety guidelines, and our Workhop and Parade Ensemble Guidelines

The Artist in Residence will be required to participate in the clean up of the CAW which will commence on Monday, June 24th.  No one is paid until their area is cleaned up.

What stipend amount would you like to request? (Amount must be between $0-$1500) You may also choose to apply as an unpaid Artist in Residence if you happen to have your own funding source for the project.
Do you also plan to create an Indiegogo.com or other sponsorships to support your project or raise funds outside of the stipend? If so can you describe what the additional funds are needed for and how you will go about your fundraising campaign?
Do you have others in mind that you want to collaborate with? If so, who? Will you divide the funds, or will the others volunteer to assist?
What materials do you expect to need?  [The Workshop has tools and repurposed materials appropriate for celebration arts.]
