Committee Descriptions

Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee. Every semester, the ADR Committee hosts several virtual gatherings to engage those teaching in mediation clinics and general ADR courses.

Awards Committee*. The Committee shall solicit nominations for the William Pincus Award, the M. Shanara Gilbert “emerging clinician” award, the Steve Ellman Memorial Clinical Scholarship award, and any other award that the Section may create. The Executive Committee will provide to the Awards Committee the criteria for each award, as designated by each award’s founders and the Executive Committee. The Awards Committee recommendations are forwarded to the Executive Committee for consideration and approval, and then forwarded to the AALS for approval in accordance with AALS requirements.

The Bellow Scholars Committee*. This Committee shall select and encourage the work of the Bellow Scholars. The Committee shall select as Bellow Scholars clinical legal educators who propose projects which exemplify the personal and professional qualities, particularly innovation and critical analysis, exhibited by Gary Bellow. The Committee may select one or more Bellow Scholars in any given year. The Scholars present their conclusions for debate, reflection, and critical analysis.

Annual Meeting Program Committee*. The Annual Meeting Program Committee: (1) shall determine the nature, format, and content of the Section program for the AALS annual meeting; (2) shall arrange for speakers, participants, and materials for the AALS annual meeting; and (3) shall notify Section members regarding the AALS annual meeting.

Communications Committee*. The Communications Committee shall design and implement effective methods for the Executive Committee to communicate with Section members and for Section members to communicate with one another. This includes a newsletter promoting program updates, honors and awards in Winter (just before the annual meeting) and Spring (just before the Clinical Conference). The Communications Committee is also asked to recommend ways in which the Section can increase its own visibility to other members of AALS through its communications.

Clinicians of Color Committee*. The Clinicians of Color Committee shall meet regularly to support its membership through programming, community gatherings, and broader initiatives as determined by its members, to advance principles of equity and inclusion both within and outside of the Academy.

Externships*. The Externships Committee shall support and provide information for teachers of externship courses about program implementation and design, teaching, scholarship, and other issues related to law school externship programs and courses.

Interdisciplinary. The Interdisciplinary Committee supports the interests and needs of clinicians in interdisciplinary settings, including through a listserve and quarterly Zoom meetings.

International CliniciansThe International Committee fosters networking, communication, exchanges of ideas, and collaborations on research, teaching methods, and special-purpose projects with colleagues outside the US. Through international collaborations, clinicians support clinical legal education including international externships, learn from their international colleagues, and gain a deeper understanding of their work.

Membership, Outreach and Training Committee*. The Membership Outreach and Training Committee shall: (1) design and implement programs and plans to increase and retain membership in the Section; (2) establish and maintain a mentoring program through which experienced clinicians support newer clinicians in their professional development and through which any clinician at a professional transition point might seek guidance and expertise from colleagues; (3) encourage, assist, and provide support for the development and implementation of conference and training programs for clinical educators on a national and/or regional basis; and (4) as requested by the chair, engage in other projects or activities consistent with the Section’s membership, outreach and training goals. For 2024, this includes considering ways in which the Section can increase its visibility to other members of AALS through programs and activities.

Nominating Committee*. The Nominating Committee shall: (1) nominate persons who are regular members of the Section to fill open positions on the Executive Committee; and (2) perform such other tasks and make such other nominations as charged by the chair after consultation with the Executive Committee. In order to create a slate of nominees for open positions on the Executive Committee, the Nominating Committee solicits from Section members the names of potential nominees who are regular members of the Section; selects nominees; and reports the names of the nominees to the Section chair not less 60 days before the AALS annual meeting.

Policy. The Clinical Legal Education Association (CLEA) has tremendous expertise in advocacy for clinical legal education, and was established to provide an independent voice. The Policy Committee is intended to complement, or potentially amplify, CLEA’s work. The committee will identify advocacy opportunities, and formulate policy positions within the constraints of AALS bylaws. They may also take charges from the Executive Committee to pursue particular issues. In 2024, the Executive Committee hopes to see the Policy committee develop approaches to supporting schools in implementing Standard 303(c), and to support clinicians who are part of that effort in states that attempt to restrict teaching such matters.

Scholarship The Scholarship Committee works to provide opportunities for clinicians to workshop academic articles and give and receive feedback on Works in Progress at the Clinical AALS conference.

Teaching MethodologiesThe Teaching Methodologies Committee develops ways to support clinicians' teaching, including through organizing periodic virtual sessions for clinicians throughout the year.

Transactional Law Clinics. Transactional Clinics Committee recently met and worked together to revise and update its mission statement to reflect the dramatic changes in transactional clinical committee over the last period of time. It also puts on an annual Transactional Clinical Conference.
