8th Grade Elective Selection 2019
We are excited to offer a variety of elective choices to our 8th grade students.  Please understand that some elective courses have enrollment limits and will be awarded on a “first-come, first- served” basis. Please have your child complete this form as soon as possible but no later than Friday, July, 5th.  

If you select Band or Chorus (full year) select 2 additional electives.
If you select Chorus (half year) select 3 additional electives.
All others select 4 electives.

Band
Instrumentalists of all levels are encouraged to perform in the band program.  Ensembles perform a wide variety of musical styles and work toward many rewarding opportunities throughout the year.  The Cedar Drive instrumental music program continues a strong legacy of excellence, and participation in rehearsals and performances is required and included in grading.  Opportunities to perform with Colt and Jazz Band grow out of participation in band class.
Chorus
Like to sing? Chorus is for you! Singers of all abilities are encouraged to join Chorus- no prior experience is required. Ensembles rehearse and perform a wide variety of musical styles and are offered many performance opportunities throughout the year. In order to maintain our standard of excellence, participation in rehearsals and performances is required and included in grading. Opportunities to perform with the Advanced Chorus, State and National Honor Choirs grow out of participation in choir class.
Flight & Space
The exciting world of aerospace comes alive. Students explore the science behind aeronautics and use their knowledge to design, prototype, and test model rockets and gliders. Custom built simulation software allows students to experience space travel. Building on their robotics skills learned in 7th grade, students will cooperatively create rovers to explore an alien world.
Plant Science Innovation Lab
Building on their knowledge of life science, students will learn about environmental problems affecting agriculture and the environment, and develop real-world solutions to these problems. Students will experiment with a variety of plant-growing techniques including hydroponics and aquaponics.  Students will identify problems in our local community and brainstorm plant-based solutions to these problems. They will use a hands-on approach to build and experiment with their solutions.
Shakespeare
T​hou rare honey-tongued nose-herb!  Say what? ​ From "translating" some Shakespearean style compliments to an interactive language mash-up, to reading and performing some of Shakespeare's most famous work, Discovering Shakespeare​ will expose students to the life, times, works, and modern inspirations of William Shakespeare.​  Why take Shakespeare?  Well, if you love to work collaboratively, enjoy performing, or simply would like to learn valuable strategies for navigating Shakespearean text to get a leg up ​​on high school, this class is for you!​
Video Production
We may think that television production is a simple task. Students will learn that television production involves much more than just operating a camera. This class will provide students with an overview of various equipment and production processes. Students will videotape and edit school events, create commercials for school events and learn how to edit raw footage using the program iMovie.
Visual Art
A comprehensive overview that integrates the four essential components of art instruction:  perception, expression, appreciation and judgment framed in a fun yet educational format.
Future Entrepreneurs
Students will develop an entrepreneurial spirit through analytical and critical thinking.   A few of the components incorporated into this class include: writing business plans for a new venture, developing and launching new products, analyzing cost effectiveness as well as public speaking with regards to gaining financial support.  Students will design, make and sell their products. Tying together conceptual classroom learning with building a business plan in a real world setting will help better prepare students for their future endeavors.
