INTRODUCTION: In this lesson, we are going to talk about the Rosary. The Rosary is a Gospel prayer that helps us think and pray about important events in the lives of Jesus and Mary. These events are grouped into four Mysteries - Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious. Each mystery contains five events. Our focus in this lesson will be on the sorrowful mysteries. First, let's think about what the word "sorrow" means. Sorrow means deep sadness. What events can you think of in Jesus' life that would have caused Jesus and his followers to feel deep sadness? If you said the events that occurred during Holy Week, you would be right. Let's take a look at the five Sorrowful Mysteries in the picture below.
THE ROSARY: The Rosary is a prayer that uses beads on a string to count the prayers as we go along. Hundreds of years ago most people could not read or write, so they memorized whatever was most important to them. The Rosary is an easy way to remember both the words of the Bible and the most important stories from the life of Jesus. The prayers that make up the Rosary are very simple, and most of the words come right from the Bible. Each time you say the Rosary, you select a set of Mysteries to say with it. The Joyful Mysteries are said on Mondays and Saturdays, the Luminous Mysteries on Thursdays, the Sorrowful Mysteries on Tuesdays and Fridays and the Glorious Mysteries on Wednesdays and Sundays. Let's take a look at a diagram of the Rosary and its prayers below.
SUMMARY: Great job this week! Holy Week is such a sacred time in our church. It is when we follow the last days of Jesus' life on earth. The Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary help us to relive and remember those last steps that Jesus took before he died on the Cross for our salvation. Praying all of the Mysteries of the Rosary during Holy Week is a wonderful way to celebrate Jesus birth, life, death and resurrection. I have attached a link to "The Holy Rosary" coloring page above for you to print out, color and use as a guide to help you say the Rosary during Holy Week.
