Our ethnic background describes how we think of ourselves. This may be based on many things, including, for example, our skin colour, language, culture, ancestry or family history. Ethnic background is not the same as nationality or country of birth. The Information Commissioner (formerly the Data Protection Registrar) recommends that young people aged over 11 years old have the opportunity to decide their own ethnic identity.
(Any information you provide will be used solely to compile statistics on the school careers and experiences of pupils from different ethnic backgrounds, to help ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to fulfil their potential. These statistics will not allow individual pupils to be identified. From time to time the information will be passed on to the local Education Authority and the Department for Education (DfE) to contribute to local and national statistics. The information will also be passed on to future schools, to save it having to be asked for again.)
Parents or those with parental responsibility are asked to support or advise those children aged over 11 in making this decision, wherever necessary. Pupils aged 16 or over can make this decision for themselves.

Why we require this information about your daughter

The school is a Licensed Student Sponsor for international students and, as a result of this status, it is obliged to comply with Home Office Guidance.  In particular, Student Sponsor Guidance: Document 2 - Sponsorship Duties provides that a licensed sponsor has a duty to “comply with all aspects of the Immigration Rules and sponsor guidance, and support immigration control, including by taking steps to ensure that every student at their institution who is subject to immigration control has permission to study in the UK throughout the whole period of their study”.

This is echoed in condition 13 of the school’s Parent Contract which provides that “The Pupil must have the right to study at the School and must live with a Parent or guardian or other person approved by the Head or in a School boarding house. Any changes to the Pupil’s domestic or immigration status must be notified in writing to the Head immediately.”

The GDST has received advice that the only way that a school can differentiate between those students who are “subject to immigration control” and those who are not is by asking all students to confirm their nationality.  The school can then follow up with those subject to immigration control to understand the basis on which they are entitled to study
