State why you should be selected as a League of Women Voters of the Houston Area Rising Star. Describe how your accomplishments reflect the mission of LWV-Houston. 500 words maximum.

Describe a government or social policy important to you and your advocacy work in support of that policy.

Describe how the League of Women Voters of the Houston Area can best reach out to and encourage the 18-40 demographic and underserved communities to participate in the election process.

Over the course of the year, the LWV Rising Stars program requires approximately 40 hours of volunteer work plus 24 hours of education and project coordination. The LWV volunteer work opportunities may vary due to the time of the year (for example, it is busier the month before a primary or general election) or by the project(s) selected by the Rising Stars. The 2022-2023 Rising Stars will also be tasked with organizing an event to recognize Women's Equality Day in August 2023. Describe in detail your commitment to complete the program and to further/grow the goals of the League of Women Voters of the Houston Area.

Identify a leadership skill you would like to advance in the Rising Stars program and provide two examples of opportunities to exercise that skill in your current work as a civic leader.

Write questions to state legislators in November/December for the Spring 2023 session to use in the LWV Voter's Guide.

Assist with LWV's Advocacy Day. Travel to Austin and advocate for/against a chosen issue.

GOTV (get out the vote) efforts in low-turnout ZIP codes within the Houston area. Build off the previous cohort's research into which ZIP codes have the lowest turnout.

Determine the boundaries of communities of interest in the Houston area, such as wards, Chinatown, Aldine, etc. that would ideally remain contiguous in a legislative district, County Commissioner's precinct, City Council district, etc. to be used to assist future redistricting advocacy.

Work on issues impacting Houstonians (flood mitigation, criminal justice, homelessness, etc.) that have been done in past cohorts. Interview past cohort members to be able to build off previous work in an optimal manner.
