AWP25 ALTA-sponsored Event Proposals
ALTA welcomes event proposals for AWP 2025 (March 26-29, 2025 in Los Angeles, CA).

As part of our literary partnership, AWP has reserved slots for up to 5 literary translation events proposed by ALTA members! These sessions are a chance to showcase what ALTA members are doing at the forefront of literary translation. By presenting at AWP, you are representing our organization and helping to ensure that literary translation is a part of the programming at AWP.

ALTA is accepting now proposals for eligible (translation-themed) events.

Submit your final lineup and description using this form by 11:59pm Pacific Time on Monday, May 20, 2024.

You will be notified if your proposal is accepted in time to be able to submit it to AWP directly, in the event that ALTA is not able to sponsor your proposed session.

Questions may be sent to Kelsi Vanada, ALTA’s Program Manager, at kelsi@literarytranslators.org.

*********************

We encourage submissions from translators at every stage in their careers. Panels can focus on the craft of translation, practical advice for entering the field, historical approaches to (and historical impacts on) translation, the significance of a particular translator or school of translation, translation pedagogy or pedagogical uses of translation, and much more—this is not meant to be an exhaustive list, but rather an inspirational one. When crafting your proposal, consider how you might bridge the AWP and ALTA constituencies, focusing on intersections of creative writing/literary translation, publishing/literary translation, and more. In support of AWP’s recent initiative regarding diversity and inclusion, we are interested in panels that explicitly engage with these ideas, and that support inclusive participation.

Please also take a moment to carefully read through AWP’s own event proposal guidelines: https://www.awpwriter.org/awp_conference/event_proposals_guidelines.

Please note that each participant may be included on up to three event proposals and up to two conference events. It is rare for three proposals for one individual to be accepted, but in the case that this happens, that participant would need to step down in order to comply with the two-event limit. AWP membership is not necessary to propose or participate in a conference event.

AWP requires that all proposals be complete (have a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 participants confirmed) at the time of proposal. More information can be found here: https://www.awpwriter.org/awp_conference/event_proposals_overview.

All 2025 AWP events must follow the following guidelines:
-include between two and five participants, including the moderator
-be seventy-five minutes in length
-include a title, description, and statement of value

AWP encourages proposals of all types and genres, and they particularly encourage proposals centering presenters in the LGBTQIA+ community, and proposals speaking to LGBTQIA+ concerns for #AWP24. For more information about AWP’s plan to support LGBTQIA+ members and attendees in Missouri, please see the Writer’s News.

Proposals may ONLY be submitted to ALTA using this form. If your event is accepted, you and your fellow panelists must execute the event as it was described in your proposal. If your event is not accepted, you will be able to submit it to AWP directly.
