Peer Support Application

The Peer Support Program with Pink Pearl Canada provide support for self-identifying young women with any type of cancer diagnosis, at any stage of diagnosis and treatment.  

Please answer the below questions to the best of your ability. This application process is meant to ensure we involving Peer Supporters who are stewards in upholding our organizational mission, vision and values. We review all applications and will be in contact with you to speak about whether we feel you would be a good fit in acting as a Peer Supporter for this up-coming year of support.

Your Responsibilities as a Peer Supporter:

1. Provide confidential, non-judgmental and unbiased support to women from diverse backgrounds.

2. Act as a resource and aim to gather information with the help of Peer Support Manager to best support your peers. 

3. Be consistent and reliable for your peer. This means keeping scheduled meeting times, being open about your limitations and asking for help when you need it.

4. Be understanding, patient and kind when faced with opinions or viewpoints/values that are different than your own.

The Peer Support Program with Pink Pearl Canada is not intended to:

1. Replace therapy or physician involvement.

2. Give medical, religious, financial or marital advice.

3. Be crisis support (ie. calls/texts 24 hours a day).

4. Solve all problems or know every answer.

5. Silence, invalidate or disenfranchise the stories of self-identifying young women living with cancer and/or the effects of cancer.

The requirements to be a Peer Supporter:

1. Have your own lived experience with a cancer diagnosis as a self-identifying young woman between the ages of 18-40, and currently be between the ages of 18-40 years old.

2. Feel comfortable speaking about cancer and ready to share details of your own experiences with your peer match. 

3. Must complete the Peer Support Training in its entirety.

4. Commit 1 hour monthly to engage with your peer support match.

5. Be available to support the Local Social Program in your area (if applicable, based on geographical location). 

6. Commit to this program for minimum of one year after completing training.

7. Complete regular check-ins with the Pink Pearl Peer Support Manager to ensure standards are continued to be met, communication remains strong, and the values of this program are maintained. This communication will be a check-in via phone or zoom after each peer interaction monthly. This time will be an opportunity to review any concerns you may have, help work through unanswered questions from peer meetings and provide you with additional resources. These check ins will also act as a means of support to you as you engage in this important work.

This is a volunteer position. Pink Pearl Canada will cover your mileage to and from events/programming in the context of your role as a Peer Supporter.

This program is a Peer led program for self-identifying women who have had a cancer diagnosis between the ages of 18-40.
