Adolescent Mental Health & Well-being: A Virtual Training Workshop for Teachers
Adolescence, a significant period in human development, is characterised by striving for individuation and identity. Adolescents have the pressure of parental, family, and societal expectations. They often feel that nobody is able to understand them. They are often found to be a challenging group to work with. Adolescents’ experiences in school and with their peers and teachers can have a lasting influence on them. Teachers can be a significant person in an adolescent's life and can help them go through these difficulties and guide them in their personal growth. Equipping teachers with the knowledge and skills to work effectively with adolescents and their concerns can contribute to optimum development and wellbeing of the adolescents.
This training program is designed in a workshop model, to be delivered to a group of 20-30 teachers with prior experience of working with adolescents (secondary and higher secondary teachers). The program will be conducted virtually over six sessions of two hours each. It will be an open group, and prior registration for each module of the program is mandatory. The sessions will be interactive to enhance mutual learning among the participants. Practice sessions in dyads/ triads will facilitate learning specific skills to elicit concerns from adolescents and understand them better.
The program will begin with an overview of adolescent development, and challenges in adolescent development such as identity formation issues, psychiatric issues, academic difficulties, and emotional, behavioural, and interpersonal issues. Subsequent modules will focus on imparting skills for working with the adolescents: for establishing an empathetic relationship and thereby helping and kindling change in them. In the last two modules, the teachers will be introduced to ideas in social emotional learning and positive psychology, and ways to put these ideas into practice in their interactions with students. The training program will not reach its culmination without emphasising the importance of strategies and skills for self- care in improving the professional and personal lives of the teachers.
