Happy Sunrise!
Why are swimming and golf "mental games" and how can you be good at a game like that?
Ed Moses Part 2, again just one video today as there is SO MUCH IN HERE.
What's anchoring your kick and what's a common mistake breaststrokers make with the pattern of their kick?  What are you trying to do with the water in breast kick and why?
Flexibility and strength are BOTH needed for a powerful breaststroke kick.  Where do you need flexibility and where should the force be driven?
Breaststroke is not an up and down stroke, but it can LOOK that way.  If it's not up and down, what is it?
What's Ed trying to do with his ankles in relation to his feet to gain maximum force in his kick catch?
Underwater breast helps you find and feel your body line in breast, why is your line (it's length and it's shape) important in breaststroke?
How is doing dolphin kick helpful to breaststrokers?
How does finding a continuous rolling flow with light hands out front help a breaststroker go fast?  (Think back to the Buoyancy lesson)
What does being horizontal in a line have to do with fast breaststroke and why is doing breast pull only or kick only underwater helpful for developing that line?
Why is breast kicking on your back helpful (remember yesterday we had a picture with a blue line from knees up through the top of his head?) and why is he kicking with only one foot at a time?
What is Ed trying to feel in breaststroke and why does he think it's so important to "feel" your stroke?  What's he feeling FOR (think car window exercise)?
Why will doing breast kick with a buoy help you, and what would you have to be good at to do this well?
What does sculling have to do with the "anchoring" he's talking about?
What are you trying to be aware of when doing scull drills?
Balance, people keep talking about how important balance is to fast swimming.  Is this something you are aware of when you swim and something you actively try to get better at?

"You're holding onto the water and moving your body beyond that hold position,"  Great words.  Describe how a breaststroker "climbs the ladder" since they would be using both arms at a time and both feet get to climb the ladder, too (unlike flutter kick strokes).
"Everything I'm doing with my kick related to forward speed."  So why do you think he's kicking against the wall at a downward angle?
Look how flat to the back he can make his feet at the top of his kick.  We talked about showing the most surface area to the back of the pool with the hand and forearm in freestyle and butterfly (and backstroke, we'll get there) but in breaststroke it's the surface area shown with your FEET that counts.
How does vertical kick help your ankle and knee flexion and why is this important for breast kick?
He's showing as much surface area to the bottom of the pool here and possible so can lift straight UP when he kicks, he's JUMPING on every kick.  He's not making round circles with his kick, he's kicking directly underneath himself.  Breast kick should be force in a straight line behind you and finish the force aiming down the line (behind you) you want to travel in front of you.
As you watch him kick, notice he does a "set" move at the top of his kick right before he pushes.  He does it all the time so watch any kick, preferably a slow motion one.  What's he setting up before he fires his kick?
After a CLEAN entry on the dive (why) the first thing he does is find his long sleek line.  Why not just get started and hit that pulldown?  Why does he do is pull and then he waits AGAIN instead of just hurrying up with his puppet-SpearW-kick?  Why so much WAITING in breaststroke overall?
FURTHER AND FASTER pullouts are the goal.  How does feeling like he's directing all his energy into the water help him go further and faster?
Let's look at Ed's turn.  When doing a turn, you want to get on the wall and off the wall as fast as possible.  Ed touches the wall with his HEAD DOWN, his arms stretched out and his suit on the surface.
He KEEPS HIS HEAD DOWN as he pulls one arm away to make room for his change of direction, the other hand STAYS on the wall.  Notice he is not trying to lift himself out of the water here, he's just trying to get his legs in front of him, he's not trying to stop.
Goodness he STILL hasn't lifted his head out of the water, he's looking at the wall now but he has still not taken a breath.  His knees are completely tucked up underneath him here so that he can quickly get his feet on the wall.
Only AFTER he changes directions does he start looking at the ceiling.  His initial wall hand is still on the wall, the other hand (his left) is about to extend for his streamline set up.
Remember, only AFTER he changes direction does he take his breath.  His feet are almost on the wall and it's the LAST thing he does.  It is NOT the first thing you do when you get to the wall.  He looks at the ceiling while taking his breath.
Finally, after he takes his breath he starts tucking under the water to prepare for his streamline.
He gets into his streamline BEFORE he starts to push off the wall.  The timing of all these elements is crucial to a proper open turn and all the steps are the same whether your doing a fly turn, a fly to back turn, a breast turn, or a breast to free turn.  SAME TURN.
To drive it home, this is the position you breath in doing an open turn.
Now from underneath the water, his arms are at length and his knees are already being pulled up.
He says he wants to immediately drop one elbow and driving the knees up to the wall.
This is why he says driving the knees UP to the wall, he's trying to get his knees ABOVE him.
He's setting his feet and his streamline at the same time BEFORE he pushes.
And he hits his line before his toes even leave the wall.
"Emphasize perfection on the walls"  Why is practicing race quality pullouts so important in practice?
Prefontaine!!!!  Let's take a break from breaststroke and learn about that guy, he was a real "fire eater."  He's the trailer to one of the movies they made about him, we should watch this movie.
