Fall 2021: Challenging Mainstream Narratives of the Middle East: MERIP's Critical Coverage of the Region
For 50 years, the Middle East Research & Information Project (MERIP) has been publishing critical analysis of Middle East politics, economy and society. Featuring perspectives often excluded from mainstream outlets, MERIP articles reach an audience that includes activists, journalists, policy-makers, students, scholars and an informed general public.

As the NYU Kevorkian Center’s Practitioner-in-Residence for Fall 2021, MERIP invites students to delve into the history and impact of the organization and go behind the scenes to see how MERIP develops and disseminates its seminal content for a diverse audience.

Students will have the opportunity to work side-by-side with MERIP staff, writers and editors to produce an issue of MERIP's magazine, Middle East Report. Through small group workshops, students will hone their skills in the following areas: content strategy, editing, non-profit management, outreach & communications, archival research and photo editing.

The fall sessions are conceived in 6-8 parts, which will be articulated through lectures, practice-based workshops and public events. The workshops will be led by members of the Middle East Research & Information Project (MERIP).

As a group, the PIR will explore the history of MERIP and its contributions to changing narratives about the Middle East. We will also collaborate to produce the final 2021 issue of MERIP's magazine, Middle East Report. Students will delve into both the critical intellectual questions raised in our coverage and the practical realities of producing a publication and running a nonprofit.
