About this event:
This intensive 3 hour workshop is an introduction to mushroom cultivation. We will cover a wide range of cultivation strategies from inexpensive low-tech garden farming to high-tech aseptic lab work. Our class will follow the life cycle of the mushroom in reverse order, starting with the fruiting stage of gourmet mushrooms and ending with spore germination on agar.
Mushrooms are for everyone. Many find mushroom cultivation intimidating, but high yield mushroom farming can be easily accessible and inexpensive. After taking this workshop, you will have the tools to build your own mycology lab at home for less than $250.
This workshop will help you get your first mushroom project started, and give you tools for when you decide to expand your operation. Before meeting, each participant will be given a digital reference book containing articles, pdfs, links, vendors, and videos relevant to each aspect of mushroom cultivation covered during the workshop. You are not required to read this book before attending. This reference book is intended to guide your work after completing the course.This workshop is recommended for new and intermediate cultivators. Prior knowledge and experience is NOT required.
The first half of this event will be indoors (masks required), and the second half will be outdoors.

About Sam Shoemaker and MycoMyco Farm:
Sam Shoemaker is an interdisciplinary artist and mycologist based in Los Angeles, California. After receiving his MFA in sculpture from the Yale University School of Art in 2020, Sam started the urban mushroom farm Myco Myco. Sam’s current work focuses on sustainable food for Los Angeles, experiments in biomaterial sculptural fabrication, and the cultivation of rare native and non-native fungi. For more, visit
