Commitment For Remote Instruction for 2020-2021 School Year
Updated:  8/18/20

We have worked diligently to prepare for all students to return to school in some form for the 2020-21 school year.  However, we understand that due to health and safety concerns, some parents/guardians may choose to have their child engage in Remote Instruction.

Please note that a decision to enter your child (children) into remote instruction is a commitment for the 2020-2021 school year.   *If for some reason, a parent wishes for their child to return to in-person instruction, these decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis based on factors including availability in the physical classrooms.  For students who start in person, it would be easier to shift to remote learning as it does not require space restrictions.

While a remote experience will be substantive, it may not be equivalent to an in person or hybrid model for learning. An example of how the models of instruction will look like is below:

Elementary (Gr. K-5) Model of Remote Instruction:
-Daily check in with an dedicated, assigned certified teacher via Google Meet
-At least one live small group instruction during the day of core subjects of ELA and Math  (age-appropriate length of time) via Google Meet
-Independent work time
-Class Wrap Up/Close via Google Meet
-Special area instructional support (Art, Music, PE, Library, SEL) through asynchronous (non-live) Google Classrooms.
-Curriculum materials provided by the district (Fundations materials, math workbooks, textbooks, guided reading books, software/subscriptions, math manipulatives)

Secondary (Gr. 6-12) Model of Remote Instruction:
-Students will be required to attend their class schedule on Google Meet at the secondary level.
-Elective course options may be limited. Google Classrooms may be used to support asynchronous instruction for electives and special areas.

While Sachem is not a 1:1 device (laptop/Chromebook) district, we continue to work to provide at least one device in a household that has no technology. However, we will not be able to offer multiple devices for each child in a household. All students with disabilities on remote instruction will receive IEP related services.

Lastly, you also have the option to Home School your child should you wish to exercise your right to educate your child on your own. The choice to home school will involve completing an Individual Home Instruction Plan for your child and submission of quarterly reports to our administrative offices.

Please note that IF COVID restrictions are lifted by state officials, it will be mandatory for ALL students to return to school.

Important:  Please ONLY fill out this survey if you are agreeing to remote instruction or (newly applying to) home school. It is understood that other students will be enrolled for in-person instruction.

This form must be completed no later than Tuesday, August 18, 2020 end of day for consideration of this commitment.
