Dear Parents and Caregivers

Re. Recent outbreak of novel coronavirus in Wuhan, China

As you will probably be aware, there has been an outbreak of the coronavirus in Wuhan, China.  At the moment, there are just over 2000 cases of infection reported in China. Most of these are in Wuhan and the surrounding Hubei Province, but there have also been numbers of cases in other parts of China, especially in larger cities such as Guangzhou and Shanghai. There have also been cases in other countries such as Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Singapore, the USA, France and Australia. There are currently no cases in New Zealand, and the official advice is that the risk is currently low.

When seeking information about the coronavirus, it is important not to pay attention to unreliable sources. You may find these links useful (WHO and Ministry of Health, NZ):

The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education are actively monitoring the situation. They are not suggesting that schools are closed nor that students should be isolated.  They have recommended that any students showing cold or flu symptoms stay home until their symptoms have gone.

To support this situation, we have made the decision to take some actions as follows:
1.     We will be revising good hand-washing practice with our students on the first day of school.  Students will be reminded to wash their hands before eating.
2.     If you wish your child to wear a face mask, this will be permitted until the current situation changes. We do not think this is necessary at the moment, but we recognise that some parents may wish to do this.
3.     We will continue with the robust cleaning procedures currently in place throughout the school.
4.     All teachers and staff will be fully briefed on the situation and will be able to offer clear advice to students.

We also need our community to help us:

Coronavirus is currently believed to have a 14 day incubation period. If you have returned from China at any point in the last two weeks you must indicate so on this google form.  The Ministry of Education are strongly recommending that all students who have visited China do not return to school until the 14th day after their return to New Zealand.  Out of courtesy, and for the safeguarding of our community, please do follow this advice.

If you have any concerns about your child please contact Health Line (0800611116) or see your GP for medical advice.  Health Line has translators available at all times.

Yours faithfully

https://www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/situation-reports/20200125-sitrep-5-2019-ncov.pdf?sfvrsn=429b143d_4 . https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov .

Hayden Iles
