Please read this information carefully before deciding to take part in this research.

What is the research about?
Traffic crashes involving cyclists have become a growing concern for public health agencies and road safety researchers and practitioners around the world. This research is part of a large international research project that is interested in factors and phenomena that are putting the safety and welfare of urban cyclists at risk.

Why have I been chosen?
You have been approached to take part in this study as you are an adult, resident in the UK, who has experience using the UK road system.

What will happen to me if I take part?
Should you choose to take part you will complete a questionnaire that will ask you about you and your experiences using a bicycle. It will also ask you about how you might react to some hypothetical on road situations. The questionnaire should take 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

Are there any benefits in my taking part?
While individual benefit may be limited, your participation will help us to build an understanding of the attitudes towards road safety in the UK. This will, in turn, help us to identify opportunities for interventions aimed at making the whole system safer for everybody.

Are there any risks involved?
There are no significant risks to taking part in this study.

Will my participation be confidential?
Yes. No identifying information will be recorded, and your questionnaire responses will remain anonymous. All data are treated as confidential.

What happens if I change my mind?
You are completely free to end your participation at any time. You are not obliged in any way to continue with the questionnaire, or even begin the questionnaire, should you so choose.

What happens if something goes wrong?
In the unlikely case of concern or complaint, please contact the Research Governance Office Legal Services, The University of Southampton, University Road, Highfield, Southampton, Hampshire SO17 1BJ Telephone: (023) 80592400.
