Nowadays, “stereotype” and “discrimination” are two common terms in daily life. A stereotype is the unfair oversimplified standardized image of a person or group. It is used to categorize a group of people. There are racial, socioeconomic, educational and gender stereotypes, among others. Stereotypes often lead to prejudice and unfairness, which are the basis of for discrimination.
There are many stereotypes about the social roles of men and women, particularly when it comes to how they are expected to behave. Mass media play a significant role in a modern world, by broadcasting information in fast pace and giving entertainment to vast audiences. They consist of press, television, radio, books and the Internet. The latter is now the most developing medium, however, TV also has a wide field of influence. By creating a certain type of message, media can manipulate people’s attitude and opinions.
