Overview:

A forest is the home to many animals and plants. A forest has several benefits for man . Trees purify the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and    checking global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide gas from  the air. Forests also increase rainfall , check floods and prevent soil erosion. Many animals including mammals, reptiles, insects and birds live in the forest. Tropical rainforests of the world contain the highest number of animal and plant species in the world. They are also called the Lungs of the planet. Many products like wood, timber , spices, gums, resins, dyes, honey, bamboo, lac and rubber are obtained from the forests. Leaves of trees like Tendu and Sal have also special use and , hence,  provide livelihood to native people. However, people used to cut trees of the forest for timber, fuel and furniture. Deforestation should be prevented and afforestation should be encouraged. The Government has enacted The Forest Conservation Act in 1980 and established several national parks and sanctuaries to protect and conserve forests.
