Commander Willie McCool Memorial Scholarship
Coronado High School is honored to present The Willie McCool Scholarship. This scholarship has been established in memory of Commander Willie McCool, a 1979 Coronado graduate, graduate of the Naval Academy, and pilot of the space shuttle, Columbia (February 1, 2003). The scholarship will be awarded to one senior in the amount of $3,000. The chosen recipient of the scholarship will be announced at the CHS Recognition Assembly.
This scholarship was the idea of Mr. Ed Jarman, the former Physics teacher of Commander McCool who wanted to honor him and the crew of the Columbia Space Shuttle Mission STS-107. The flight resulted in tragedy upon re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere on February 1, 2003. The scholarship honors students who have shown academic promise and have intentions of majoring in math, science, engineering, computer science, or pre-medicine. The amount of the scholarship is determined each year by the assigned committee. Students apply in the spring of their senior year and their applications are reviewed by the scholarship committee.
