Salve!

Welcome to the Landesmuseum Mainz. The Landesmuseum owns one of the largest and most important collections of Roman stone monuments north of the Alps with over 2000 stones.

A selection – military and civilian gravestones, architectural components, altars and consecration inscriptions – is presented in the Baroque riding hall, which nowadays is therefore also referred to as the "Steinhalle” (“Stone Hall"). You are welcome to read more about the Stone Hall’s history and construction from the signs on the wall.

At this point, we would like to introduce you to the historical and archaeological context of our exhibits in the Landesmuseum’s Stone Hall and give you an in-depth look at our exhibit’s multi-faceted elements.

The content is divided into 5 subcategories, each of which has been assigned a colour for a better overview. This should provide orientation. Select one or all areas – depending on your interests and how much time you have.
