Lunar Codex - Indigenous Music
The Norval Morrisseau Estate has teamed up with Lunar Codex to create a time capsule of Indigenous music from across Canada to be immortalized on the moon for the next billion years in their next mission departing in 2025. This specific time capsul will be placed on a SpaceX rocket called Polaris, which will be launched into space in September 2025, landing on the southern pole of the Moon in October 2025.

We would like to include a wide selection of Indigenous music from coast to coast to coast, including traditional and contemporary social music that artists share with us. This means we will accept traditional social music – but NOT ceremonial music, even if it is offered to the project.

We invite all song creators, designated knowledge keepers, and copyright holders, of Indigenous music, traditional and contemporary, to share their music for this momentous moment where this music will be protected and put in a time capsule which can last up to 1 billion years on the moon.

There are no fees for inclusion in the time capsule. The Lunar Codex assumes all archival media costs, the costs of database and website documentation, as well as incremental costs of the rocket launch, and of payload space on the lunar lander.

Please note this project confirms all participating artists will retain full copyright ownership of their work, and that no royalties will be paid to due this program's purpose to archive vs publish or distribute songs.

Any and all copyright holders (such as labels, archives, museums and libraries) of indigenous songs who are not the creators or designated knowledge keepers will not be accepted due to the ethical limitations of sharing indigenous music without the nation's or creators concent.
